Square Enix dropped today the Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster; some players are very excited to dive back into this classic JRPG, while others are just fuming about the physical release situation-lack thereof, I might add. Certainly messy.

Producer Tomoya Asano welcomed those new to the franchise and returning fans with a lively tweet, together with a new illustration by Rina Yoshiura featuring some new minigame content. Adorable, right? The replies, however, are a completely different story.

What is the big drama, you ask? Square Enix decided to provide a “game key card” instead of the proper physical cartridge for Switch version, and let me tell you: gamers have NOT been gracious about it. Comments like “Too bad there is no physical release. Game key cards are not physical” by @mpop1976 flooded the internet, while @Paul7Law went further, saying it was actually “loss sale,” and demanding that they “sort this out.” The user @proof_itachi really said all he wanted to say with “Key card 🤮.” That hurt.

On the brighter side, some gamers like @LowQualityGojo are just eager to experience the game for the first time, dropping a “Excited to play it today! 🥰” Meanwhile, @YouSpoonyBard1 was already a sob fest, saying, “It’s…. It’s real. Oh good god I’m tearing up from the title card alone.” So cute.

Then there is an… other drama. Some replies went off the rails complaining about Square Enix’s profile pic (??), with @Cirilla_FER calling them for “virtue signaling” and @AussieGamr flat out demanded they else “De-gay your pfp.” @hentaiskill1 stepped in for defense, calling out the “LGBT obsession” comments as projection. Yikes. Can we talk about the game for once?

And PC players are salty, too. Several, including @StarScorpia and @AlternisMid, begged for a Steam release. Sorry folks-no dice, for now.

Despite alls the chaos, Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster is here, hikers by the enhancements from the original 3DS version-Better graphics, QoL improvements, and those new minigames that Asano was SO into. Either great for a replay or a fresh JRPG, but if you were there to get a physical cartridge that you fancy to display on your shelf? Sorry to break it to you.

Those key cards instead of physicals from Square Enix are just an insult to the fans. Will it hurt sales? Probably. That being said, to the non-collectors, this game is a must-try. A good idea might be to wait for it to go on sale if you are on the fence. Or just keep calling them out until they get off their ass to do the physical release. Either way.
