The latest tyranny of Twitter by Ubisoft about Assassin’s Creed Shadows was an invitation to a fierce debate about what really is the best weapon to use in feudal Japan. At the expense of trying to start a fight, the official Assassin’s Creed account asked players which weapons they have been using most-and the ensuing chaos is the best part.

From classic katanas to seldom seen kusarigama, players seem divided on what is the deadliest weapon in their arsenal. Some will stand to say it’s the katana-time to kill with speed and power; others will say the kusarigama’s rush of pain is insurmountable. And then there is the sneaky little bastard, the fast and dirty option: the tanto.

Not all the comments were praising Shadows. While talking about the weapons were complaints-the game is slow and rife with microtransactions, bad face animations (yes, someone claimed Assassin’s Creed II had better expressions). One even went on and called the game-ass and congratulated Ubisoft on its recent layoffs-whoa!

Now we talk about the technical stuff. Hell, a desperate fan was crying out for assistance with his game crashing repeatedly while in the hideout, stopping broken progress; another complained about the Sumi-E trophy being an absolute nightmare because you have absurdly long seasonal cycles with absolutely no option to skip them.

And of course, the Basim fans are angry. “WHY WAS THE THREAD FROM VALHALLA NOT CONTINUED IN SHADOWS?” one player demanded in all caps. Others are already clamoring for Valhalla 2.

But I get it, not everyone. Others are calling the combat one of the best Assassin’s Creed has ever seen while one actually shared a gameplay clip and called it “satisfying” to death.

So, what are the results? Entering Shadows, the katana is probably an okay choice, but don’t sleep on the kusarigama with its chain-and-sickle-style mayhem. Also, don’t get into microtransactions, unless you really, really want to avoid four hours of grinding for an XP boost.

For Ubisoft, there is still time to convince the fans-a great variety of weapons is working well to keep them playing. Now if Ubisoft could just fix those crashes…
