Within the upcoming World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion, there are few features more integral than the Covenant mechanic being added. Rather than fighting for a variety of different factions as players typically have, we’ll be choosing one of four Covenants.
Each Covenant is tied to a realm and embodies the themes and values therein. The unholy revelry of the Venthyr provides a distinctly different experience from the mischievous rebirth-centric Fae or virtuous, cleansed Kyrians.
Complimenting this is the fact that each Covenant presents a variety of rewards, including unique abilities and soulbindings for players to take advantage of. These mechanics will be a dominant source of power while players fight through the Shadowlands.
With all that said, it’s easy to see why Covenants are one of the things that players are most interested in. Thankfully, Blizzard has now added the quests to join Covenants to the playable beta!
Navigating to this choice presents a glimpse at what sort of powers are available to players as well as providing a bit of an overview over what one can expect from that Covenant. By allowing players to test this mechanic, we have our first real glimpse into what Covenant gameplay will be presented as.
The first option given is the Venthyr, described as “aristocratic overseers of souls burdened with excessive pride and wickedness.” By swearing to this Covenant, players will help the Venthyr guide souls through to atonement for their actions.
Those with the proper might are likely to choose the Necrolords of Maldraxxus, who cast out the weak and bolster the strong. While players will recognize Maldraxxus as the source of the Scourge, the Necrolords find their true purpose in the military defense of the Shadowlands and are a true force for good.
Third, players may find themselves completing the questline to join the tranquil spirits of the Night Fae. Those with a bond to nature and rejuvenation may choose to join the Night Fae and aid in restoring the eternal cycle of death and rebirth for all.
Finally, the virtuous and pure Kyrians may provide the call to action that a player desires, serving as guardians of the afterlife and escorts of the souls of the dead. Devoted forever to their purpoe, the Kyrians provide a heavenly and devout experience for players worthy to enter their ranks.
With the Covenant questlines finally added in, players are bound to soon be treated to a wealth of new information about what we can expect from the Covenant system. Regardless of which Covenant you may pick, each will provide a wonderfully unique and engaging storyline as you work to restore the Shadowlands to their proper state.
