The announcement made by PlayStation has really surprised and amazed the horror game fans all over the world. The horror classic which was dropped, later on, revived, and now resurrected once again in 2003 for the PS2 is none other than the horror game Fairy Tales II: the Crimson Butterfly Remake. The Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is earmarked for PS5 on March 12, 2026.

It is a very true statement! This is a game that sent the majority of the grandparents screaming, along with the very creepy ghosts through that cursed Camera Obscura, getting a remaking with a very thorough and contemporary right from the ground-up at that! This whole thing is more than just a lazy port or a remaster with better textures. It is a complete remake, totallycustom to take full advantage of the PS5’s power. Players are… just putting it mildly, they are having a lot of feelings about it.

The announcement made by the official PlayStation Twitter account was definitely felt in the community, and the replies were a crazy mixture of pure hype, cautious optimism, and people wanting to know about other classic games. One user, Chirag_S_kotian, expressed his astonishment as follows: “Dude, Fatal Frame II being remade is wild! I mean, I love Crimson Butterfly but didn’t think they’d ever touch it. From what I’ve seen, it’s a full ground-up remake, not just a port!” That’s the major takeaway from this. This is a big bet from Koei Tecmo that there is potential to be tapped in this cult classic series.

But of course, the argument that the remake announcement is still going on. A large group of people supports the decision; however, in the same breath, a tiny minority questions why the second game. The same user, Chirag_S_kotian, shared his thought, “hmm, not sure about this… While FF2 is great, the original Fatal Frame (2002) is the one that really needs a full remake first. It is the one that set the mood & the lore.

Skipping straight to the sequel kind of messes the momentum up for the new players, to be honest.” This is indeed a valid statement. Newbies may find it hard to follow the tale of the two sisters, Mio and Mayu Amakura, in a village haunted by ghosts if they are not given the first game’s lore as context. This situation begs the question: is Koei Tecmo counting on the players to simply play it out of order? Maybe they are placing their bet on the popularity of Crimson Butterfly as the most attractive entry to test the waters.

The excitement, no doubt, is emanating. The reply from JessieLameque was practically all of us: “CAN’T WAIT!!!! I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!! MIO-CHAN!!!! 😃😃😃😃😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰” That is indeed the vibe we are bringing when the month of March rolls in. Another user, 3hunnatheArtist, even called it a “huge” thing and marked their calendar for the release date of March 12, long before the hype began. And web3kendoe cannot wait for the scares, he went to Twitter to say, “Yes! The haunting mood of Fatal Frame II on PS5? The red butterflies are going to get under my skin just like before.”

But wait, what was I saying? Oh yes, I remember; the atmosphere. The original Fatal Frame series was a perfect illustration of fear. They did not resort to jump scares but rather created a constant through the disturbing feeling that something was very, very wrong. The very thought of putting up that All Gods Village, with its age-battered Japanese buildings and those ghostly red butterflies, for vaunting with state-of-the-art graphics is a very powerful mix of fear and desire.

As playrevived put it, they are “Interested to see how the remake keeps that same eerie atmosphere.” This is indeed the million-dollar question. Can the impressive remake duplicate the peculiar, low-poly dread of the PS2 original, or will the transition to more realistic visuals cause it to lose something?

The announcement also set off a flood of calls for other forgotten classics, of course. User RinoTheBouncer was quick to call for a petition in the replies: “We want Dino Crisis 2 and Parasite Eve II on PS Plus Premium.” WolfgangMishima then chimed in with, “Parasite Eve 1 must be there before all that 👀.” It’s a common sentiment. Each time a classic game gets re-released, players tend to think that maybe, just maybe, their own personal favorite from the attic is going to be next in line for the treatment. User irgei also virtually requested, “Can you, in the meantime, make the survival horror genre proud?”

This game is definitely a major entry in the survival horror genre, and many are hoping it will pave the way for more remakes. While PlayStation is getting this exclusive, Xbox fans are also hoping for more horror classics on their platform.
