The creator of the independent game Beast Breaker, Vodeo Games, has stated that it is closing down due to its inability to find money from investors or publishers.

The developer of Vodeo Games alerted followers through the main Vodeo Games Twitter account that it is out of money and cannot continue to support the staff as a whole. As a last-ditch effort, Vodeo has stated that it would continue to work on the Steam version of Beast Breaker in the hopes that it will attract many new players, but the developer won’t be releasing any further games after that. Vodeo then expresses gratitude to the supporters and says it is pleased with everything achieved in the time available.

Vodeo’s statement states, “However, the scenario is one that tiny studios are all too acquainted with. We’ve been working hard for a year to find publishers and investors who will fund our next project but to no avail. Due to this, we are no anymore able to keep the team together due to a lack of funding. Without our fantastic team, Vodeo would not exist.

Despite being one of the lesser independent game producers, Vodeo Games was, in some respects, the most significant. To create a positive precedent for the rest of the video game business, the company gained notoriety in December of last year for being the first US studio to effectively unionize and implement four-day workweeks.

So while it’s disappointing to learn of Vodeo’s demise, perhaps it was able to serve as an inspiration and make other independent developers reconsider the crunch mentality.
