Now Treyarch exploded this Tweet with a cryptic proclamation: “The next evolution of Black Ops is coming,” with the #BlackOps7 tag. No teaser; no other details; only this. And then-the internet exploded.

Right from the word go, that tweet is so very vague. It builds hype. Coming from a studio that’s churned out a Call of Duty every year, you’d expect no less. But oh, the replies-the real fireworks! Some over-the-moon; some already calling it trivial; while some are begging for a Black Ops 2 remaster. Classic COD community, I tell you.

Danl Postle (@NorCOD_) bluntly said, “This either makes or breaks you guys, I ain’t gonna lie.” And honestly, he is right. Treyarch’s last few releases have been… well, let’s say, divisive” Some loved them, and some hated them, but a whole lot of them want the studio to return to the glory days of Black Ops 2.

Speaking of Black Ops 2, a good amount of replies just kept begging for a remaster. Paul Masters (@PaulMasters01) put it straight: “Just fucking remaster Black Ops 2 already. It’s what we all want.” He wasn’t alone. Some others agreed that a remaster is what they’re really after, much more than a new game even.

Those who don’t have any nostalgia just insult Treyarch for lack of innovation. ViTRiFY (@ViTRiFY_) writes, “Next evolution? Y’all have zero innovation and creativity and drop the same fucking game every year man 😂.” Ouch. And he is not alone there. Mieksy (@MEEEEAAAAK) said something similar: “You have to do something new for it to be an evolution. Call of Duty has been the same exact shit since like 2012.”

And then there was the debate about whether COD is even good anymore. SpurnedSeeker (@SpurnedSeeker) went in with, “COD hasn’t been good since BO1 and even that’s pushing the definition of ‘good’.” Max King (@Stay_Frosty1226) came down with his last good Black Ops was BO2 and last real COD was Ghosts.

But then these prognosticators started predicting Black Ops 7’s death knell even before it sees the light of day. Red Latifi (@PCLivesMatter) tagged it “dead on arrival,” while Amo (@Isabellix_) simply said, “This shit is going to FLOP. I can’t wait.”

However, not everything was doom and gloom. Too many were cautiously optimistic, particularly those family members who enjoyed the old-school Black Ops. Jairo (@Psycho_jairo) felt “BO3 vibes with the robots n shit” coming off that teaser, which could be good news for those fans.

Never lacking for requests—the list included better anti-cheat, no online-only requirement, and god forbid, no more COD HQ—Johnny St.Cloud (@johnny_stcloud) went off on a mini-rant about AI chat bans and kids playing the game, and yeah, that’s quite another conversation.

What we do have here is a Treyarch doing something that the COD community is already split over. Some are ready for the next evolution; some just want a remaster; and many are already sure it is going to suck.

Will Black Ops 7 even be able to cast the weight of its own hype? We’ll never truly know. Treyarch now has a mountain to climb.
