Tom Holland, who is playing the role of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie adaptation, thinks that the movie based on Naughty Dog’s third-person action/adventure franchise will be a success, as he explained why the upcoming film will be different from the video games, on top of also being different any other movie adaptation of a video game.

While speaking with IGN, Holland said that, unlike in other movie adaptations, the Uncharted film will offer an origin story, thus making it possible for people who haven’t played the games to enjoy the movie. Moreover, the actor said that the upcoming movie will offer new content for fans of the video game franchise.

“I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games,” said Holland during his chat with IGN. “So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”

Even though Holland seems optimistic about the Uncharted movie, if you’ve been following its production, then you’ll know that there’s a good chance that it’ll end up being a disaster, and there’s also a chance that the movie won’t get made at all.

Since the project was announced, the film has gone through several directors, and as of right now, the movie still hasn’t found a new director. So, there’s a good chance that the movie will end up being scrapped.

Some fans are disappointed that Holland landed the role of Nathan Drake, as many were hoping to see Nathan Fillion, who made a short film where he played Drake back in 2018, land the role, as he seemed like the perfect fit. But, given that the movie adaptation will be an origin story, the studio behind it likely wanted to cast a younger actor, as Fillion is 48 years old.

While the future of the Uncharted movie is still uncertain, it seems like Sony is continuing the video game franchise, as their new San Diego-based studio has been rumored to be developing a fifth main installment to Nathan Drake’s story. As of right now, Uncharted 5 hasn’t been announced, but Nolan North, who is the voice actor behind the series’ main character, said that he’d be willing to return for a fifth game.
