This downtime was only brief because Capcom just dropped the hype bomb again: Street Fighter‘s Art Contest is BACK-this time, it is the New Challenger Edition! After the overwhelming success of the event last year, Capcom is trying to double the glory with bigger stakes.
The setup goes here: 26 characters. One winning image for each. The best part is that the winning image is selected to appear on New Challenger screens in-game. So technically, the winning artwork will be the very first graphic the player encounters upon booting up the game. Pressure?
The event runs from 8 am, 1 June, to 7:59 am, 29 June. An entire month to finish something worthy of glory; more to the point, a month to drown in panic and wine while drafting work. No judgment here.
Response to the announcement went chaotic- in the best way possible. The hype train has started with demands for Outfit 4. There are questions now, thanks to someone on Twitter going by the handle @_Wateus_, on whether last stitch’s entries can bag it again. @ButtHngry is inquiring why, to his/her understanding, some of this art isn’t in the game already. Quite fair.
The Cammy gang, however, are in full force. @RosannaMine is already calling for “amazing arts for my baby Cammy,” @IdrawCammy swears he “will do my best,” and @JudgeOfGod88 hustles the dialogue with hype GIFs blowing it up kind of like 1999. That’s some immaculate energy.
It’s not all roses and Hadoukens either. Another round of shade testifies: @TakiOneLove tells Capcom, “pick better artworks this time.” Oh, snap. Then @Bruhmom88180002 hit us right in the feels: “it’s taking forever because there’s only 12 people working on this game.” Yikes.
The old debate returned with @Joto_Rez: should I resubmit last year’s banger or start fresh? The struggle is on. Then, @meeksthemixgod comes through praying for Dhalsim playing basketball-As god is my witness, you better make that happen.
Now what? If you got some artistic skills (or at least an amazing imagination), go ahead and dust off the drawing tablet. Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy these people making wonders. The outbreak is surely going to explode.
Maybe we see some Luke art this time, courtesy of @appley_saucey. Or metonymically, that is Outfit 4. A gamer can dream.
