Square Enix just surprised fans in Tokyo with a pop-up shop at Ikebukuro, and it’s attracting attention across the Internet. A picture of the store was shared via an official tweet, apparently showing nothing inside except merchandise for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts by Square Enix.

No specifics have yet been revealed regarding what might be found inside, but judging by what has been offered at the previous couple of pop-ups, expect exclusive goodies and limited-edition collectibles, perhaps interspersed with some peeks at the projects to come.

Quite aptly, it’s set in Ikebukuro, a thriving enclave of anime and gaming culture in Japan, the best spot for Square Enix to showcase its merchandise, considering most of the fans pour into the area for other otaku wonders, such as Sunshine City and Animate.

The timing also seems very interesting, with no major releases from Square Enix-all the better for the slow build-up of excitement for something down the line. Or maybe just pamper the fans with brand-new stuff. Nonetheless, it is working.

So far, understandably, there are no replies to the tweet, which is very odd. Generally, Square Enix announcements include fan profanities, begging for remasters for their favorite franchises. Maybe everyone rushed to the store instead of typing. Or is it so new that hell is about to break loose?

To every Tokyo resident who loves Square Enix games: just something to keep in mind while checking out this pop-up.

There is no mention of how long it will last, but these stores never hang around for long. If history has any impact, it will be limited soon, so if you want that exclusive Sephiroth statue and possibly a Kingdom Hearts keyblade replica, you’ve got to get moving. And if you are not in Japan?

Well, prepare yourself for eBay to go up when these resellers flip those steals.

Square Enix really keeps catering to them during these pop-ups and cafe collaborations. Play it smart-not letting the hype fizzle between big releases. The only thing left is to see whether this Ikebukuro site discloses even a little info about where the company is headed. A new spinoff for Final Fantasy? More lore on Kingdom Hearts? Or just a treasure chest of awesome merchandise? Well, there’s one way to find out: head down to Ikebukuro.
