Since the post credit scene rolled at the end of the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, fans have been clamoring for a sequel.

Obviously, that sequel is on its way, though we had gotten no official work on it up to this point.

However, that has changed, with Paramount Pictures announcing a tentative release date for the new film of April 8, 2022.

A few weeks ago, a rumored production schedule for the upcoming video game adaptation sequel was leaked. This reported schedule had production starting sometime in March of 2021.

That same report stated that the codename for the movie would be Emerald Hill. It’s not likely that this is the actual title of the movie. Oftentimes, highly anticipated movies film under an assumed title, so that fans won’t flood the set and interfere with production.

Most famously, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of The Jedi filmed under the working title Blue Harvest. It was meant to look like a fictional horror film to throw people off the scent.

Emerald Hill, however, is a name that should be familiar to Sonic fans. It is one of the stages from Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis console. In fact, it was the first stage in that game.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was also the first time players got to see Tails in action, and the Emerald Hill Zone was the first time he was playable. Seeing as how it has been confirmed that Tails will be in the second Sonic Movie, the filming title seems like a fitting homage.

Production on the movie is set to wrap by May 10, 2021.

As of this time, it’s unknown if James Marsden or Jim Carrey will return to reprise their roles from the original, but it is very likely that at least Carrey will be back, since he play’s Sonic’s arch nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. It’s expected that Ben Schwartz will return to voice Sonic, but that has also not been confirmed as of this time.

Sonic The Hedgehog set records for the best opening box office for a video game movie, bringing in $57 million in its first three days. This unseated the previous record holder, Detective Pikachu, which netted $54.3 million in its first few days.

It has also been rumored that Knuckles the Echidna would be appearing in the Sonic sequel, though that is far from confirmed. It was even rumored back in February that Dwayne The Rock Johnson was in talks to play the popular character.
