Oh, really? And who now is there in the top 10 best profit-earning films of 2024? Much bravely waiting for Sonic the Hedgehog’s third cinematic adventure, which truly netted his boy $123.6 million in profit for Paramount, and thus, was sitting in number 10 in Deadline’s annual profitability list. Not bad at all for a blue blur that lived its life as a meme-worthy CGI nightmare before its glow-up.
Indeed, the news summered fiery reactions on Twitter, while fans and skeptics weighed in on Sonic’s box office entry and reception. Some were more thrilled, for instance, @99Modded_ chiming in with “BEST MOVIE OF 2024 OMGGGG” and thinking subtlety was for chao gardens. Others more calmly, such as @JustImaginePictures, shared “awesome news” and pointed out its proper positioning at worldwide box office 10th.
But whenever good news rolls out, the negative spirits are never far behind. The decree of user @DeleonAnde59945 concerning the movie not being great was contested by numerous others who challenged him as to why he cared to comment; some did seem to take offense at his words.
“The memes took over lmao,” said user @IsabelleHollyw2 while mercilessly roasting the film – even the naysayers were unable to avert its powerful coup de grace. However, chaos in reply went to the drummer @the_Bradster007 stating, “The Green Goblin movie made triple that” with a pumpkin emoji-and…yeah.
What responses are important? Everybody and their mothers wanted to know what movies ranked above Sonic. @niksalinis, @m33831707, @KamiAnimess, and @NotScotBoras were all buzzing with some variation of “what’s the full list?” or “what was #1?” Deadline surely kept us hanging!
Other highlights include: @LarryHaywa36905 teasing “they say spin-off films coming soon” (When’s the Shadow standalone coming?), @MEDY_PIVKO showing off their Blu-ray delivery, and @calheelshire making love to AMC theatres as if they are getting cuts from the profits. The most relatable reply, however, came from @KevinSunJr, who simply asked, “Can I get a mil?” Same, Kevin. Same.
What’s sweetly sugar-coating Sonic 3’s win is now the whole reasoning behind this franchise making money and ripping off going for spinoffs, thinking that the original movie design barely made it past the status quo due to an internet bullying campaign urging Paramount to get it right. @Mello_Proto got it right: “Show people the movie they want to see in the theater, and they’re gonna come. Suck it, Netflix!”
Still, we do not know what rules the profitability chart, but having Sonic trump most 2024 releases implies that video game adaptations are not simply alive; they are thriving ahead. And with really good buzz on more films in the Sonic universe, that $123.6 million profit would surely be just the icing on the cake. Gotta go fast to the bank.
