Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the newest installment in the Yakuza series. It is considered a soft reboot of the franchise, starring a brand new protagonist out for revenge.
It was previously confirmed that characters from the last games would make an appearance. The game will also feature new female co-stars.
Earlier this year, Sega hosted a contest for women. They would appear in the newest game to co-star along with the protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga. Almost one thousand women applied to be part of the new game.
Sega eventually chose ten female finalists that would appear in the newest game. The winner was chosen in late July, but Sega has only recently released the game renders and screenshots.
Sega has announced the five winners, along with their 3DCG renders appearing in the game. They will also perform voice acting for the characters.
The Grand Prix Winner, who will serve as Ichiban’s co-star, is Eri Kamataki. She is the president of a small Japanese company. Once falling on hard times, Eri was inspired by Ichiban’s encouragement, and they rebuilt the company. She continues to help Ichiban. Eri is usually calm, but she has some amusing moments.
The remaining four finalists don’t have as vital roles but will appear in the game. They also provide voice acting for their characters.
Iroha Yanagi works at a bar where Ichiban hangs out. She has a reputation for being one of the “best listeners.”
Sawa Sumire is a factory worker who has one of the best repair skills.
Manae Miyakoshi works at a school and wants to help others grow. She’s quite popular with the students, and there are rumors that many enroll just to see her.
Ririka is an employee at a job staffing agency. She introduces new jobs to Ichiban. She’s very blunt with her statements and isn’t afraid to voice her opinion.
Using real-life people as characters in the Yakuza series is not new. Many real-life characters have made small appearances throughout the games. One of the major collaborations included New Japan Pro Wrestling wrestlers in the Yakuza 6 Clan Creator Mini-Game.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 16, 2020. A worldwide release is scheduled for sometime in 2020.
