Attention, pirates! Season 16 of Sea of Thieves comes with great treats: new explosive tools, helpful skeletons (did I just say that?), and the very first Reaper’s Bones Voyages. Also, there goes another change with the Twitch Drops because, why not?
We will start with the Cannon of Rage. Yep, special indeed. This is not your usual cannon put on a ship only to fire at other ships. If one were to judge from the trailer, this cannon is literally a deployable kind which explodes on deployment. It is basically a matter of keeping it maintained or it will blow up your own ship, and it is nasty; hence why in the community it is called the ‘chase cannon’! I cannot think of anything louder for someone in their hand telling someone to “stop running.” An excited player called Brandon Tansey said, “The possibility of finally having a chase cannon that must be maintained to keep from exploding is incredible.” And really, I agree with him.
Now enter the Reaper’s Bones Voyages. For those only vaguely familiar, the Reaper’s Bones are the “we’re here to ruin your day” kind of group in Sea of Thieves. The fact that they now have their own voyages means so many new chances to spread havoc and make nuisances of themselves, which is always perfectly fine. New cosmetics will be made available quickly to the community, and the hype is already burning bright. One pirate, CaptainGG_R, screamed in all caps, “THIS IS SO SPECTACULAR, YAYYYYY.” Yeah, that’s the exact feeling I have.
About Twitch Drops, then, uh…people do have opinions. Rewards this time include gold, renown, an emote, a very plain black flag (it got roasted), a Reaper voyage, a Gilded Phoenix hurdy-gurdy, a hat, and a Spring Blossom pistol. Some of the players, like kaoteek, were unimpressed. “Just watch as they’ll put the hat as the hour 6 reward.” Ouch. Others, like pablo_guy6, pointed out that most drops lately have been reskins anyway, so…nah.
Speaking of third-person gameplay —the elephant in the room-, player Rafael Kruger said, “All these updates are cool, but third-person gameplay has been a long-standing desire of the community.” And really? He ain’t wrong. Some players felt it would give the game more energy to it, while others like Shadd_the_Rad shot back with, “HUHHHHHHHH WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WANTS 3rd PERSON???????” So, uh, mixed feelings.
And skeletons. According to rumor, it is an upgrade as well, details unknown so far. There were jokes for them becoming “helpful.” Sure, why not? Maybe they will finally stop shooting at us for five seconds.
There will also be a Gold & Glory event; basically, a double XP weekend for pirates. Players were sarcastic about it. RevBombRR said, “Oh thanks for that boost in renown. I was only level 97 after the first hour. I really needed that renown from drops.” Yeah, we feel that.
So, what’s the verdict? Well, Season 16 is shaping up to be insane, explosive, and loaded with new avenues to wreak havoc. Whether it’s for the Cannon of Rage, Reaper’s Voyages, or some Twitch Drop rants, there will be something for each and every one of you. Please, excuse us while we go and find a cannon to explode accidentally on purpose.
