An enigmatic tweet just crossed the Blizzard Entertainment’s official Overwatch Twitter handle, and the players went nuts for it! Some of the responses are a delight! The tweet read: “The years start coming and they don’t stop coming 👴 What’s the best (or worst) thing about getting older? ✨.” Darkly hilarious and existential replies flowed from the Overwatch community.
That leads me to the bigger question: why did Blizzard actually put this question out? Some kind of hint about a skin that gets older? A deep pondering? Or just bored social media folks? Can only speculate. One thing for sure: the players took it and ran.
Some of the responses were completely dark. @jken0608 just gave the perfect example of “All my friends and family begin to die.” Oof. Escalated very fast. @cilayin thought: “Best thing about getting older is that you’re one year closer to death.” Cheers to that!
But doom and gloom were far from the only solutions. @flwrial kept it real with “Standing up and your bones cracking a little bit,” aka I feel you. @SamiBapWeaver put it the gamer way: “Best thing: I finally understand team comps. Worst thing: I forget them mid-fight.” That’s the duality of man.
And then some were trolling Blizzard: @Biolizard2 exclaimed, “Spending the next 20+ years waiting for my favorite hero in the game to get a new skin. 237 Days since Wrecking Ball got anything new.” Oof. And @strstyler said, “Realizing it’s been nearly 3 years and Junker Queen is the only release hero that didn’t get a dance emote.” Meta, Devs, we need you to hear this.
Some players went further in their criticism of Blizzard’s gameplay decisions: @simulacra098 said, “Well the best thing is definitely not the pride content not being available in certain countries ❤️❤️ especially how other games don’t disable it…” Touché.
But there were words of encouragement too. @IcyVolk said, “The best thing about getting older: you start preserving your precious energy towards good experiences… That includes solo queueing in competitive Overwatch! Focus on the moment to moment, and less on toxic players! Report, and move on!”
Random gems kept coming, like @BlackwinterM4 with the Smash Mouth quote (??): “You’re Brain gets smart but you’re head gets Dumb.” How profound.
What is the conclusion here? Overwatch players live a life with a cocktail of existential angst, real talk about creaky bones, and loyalty to their mains. Whatever Blizzard may have intended-with-starting-a-conversation-or-just-making-a-meme-they-got-they-engagement. And honestly? It kind of feels good seeing the community get serious even if almost half of the responses made us ready to question our own existence.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to stretch our backs and contemplate the inevitable passage of time while queuing for Competitive. Happy aging, heroes.
