The announcement dropped by Nintendo feels bombastic enough to mean something different for each section of the audience: gulping breaths of anticipation on one hand and the rest. Nintendo has let slip that a Donkey Kong Bananza Direct will be airing on June 18, 6 A.M. PT, giving us about 15 minutes of new information about an important Switch game. This stream will be on various Nintendo channels, and judging by the name, we are about to experience hundreds of barrels worth of monkey business.

Some didn’t gush with excitement about the Direct. Responses to Nintendo’s tweet are a mad mix of excitement, cynicism, and outright chaos. Some players are ecstatic for some more Donkey Kong action, since it’s been over a decade since the last mainline Donkey Kong game. Others? Well, let’s just say they aren’t tossing bananas in joy.

One said Freezle – Tobi❄️: “We need a real Direct. You only have like 2 Switch 2 games.” Oh boy. Meanwhile, CyberRobbie foresaw doom: “15 min? Watch it just be a trailer and naming the few new things highlighted in it.” Considering Nintendo’s record on ridiculously short and borderline disappointing directs, it really isn’t that crazy. Remember that Mario Kart World Direct? Yeah. It really did not blow anyone’s mind.

With the ongoing talk of the Switch 2, some people are now tired of the comments on pricing: “Lolol $80 though? I’ll just keep the OG switch and stick to the steamdeck. Nintendo is about to fall off a cliff.” MooseMan countered this criticism:”If you couldn’t get a Switch 2 by now, that’s your fault. This was by far the best launch for any system.” Never-ending counterattacks.

There would never be a Nintendo announcement without those weird comedic interludes setting in. “Oh these are pretty cool bananas!” says DeluxeGamer705. GabezCube goes on to say, “It’ll be monke time shortly soon.” We do have to thank Dede nne for that classic ‘return to monke’ just because, really.

So, what would one expect from this Donkey Kong Bananza Direct, since it has a precedent for being a big detailed presentation for specific games that go into details about gameplay mechanics, big announcements of new characters (Diddy Kong fans watching), and possibly a timeframe on releasing said game? The short run time of 15 minutes is Sony-like saving on time pressure in a tight schedule. So here’s to packing an impressive amount of content.

One way or another, if you’re excited about that announcement or not, it will make its way to your viewing list. Because, really, when’s the last time Nintendo drew us down? Okay, don’t answer that; just put June 18 on your calendar and prepare for some primate-powered fun. Or disappointment. Either way, it’s gonna be an event.
