Throughout recent years, Naughty Dog has been able to share some of the very interesting behind-the-scenes gossip about one of the creepiest features in The Last of Us Part II: the Seraphite whistles. Maged Khalil Ragab, the Dialogue Lead of The Last of Us Part II, took it further and explained how the team created that sinister form of communication that still sends chills down the player’s spine after all these years. And honestly? It is way cooler than we ever expected.

The whiskers of death were never intended to just be random chilling sounds; in fact, Naughty Dog went on and designed an entire language based on the various whistles with specific patterns referring to distinct meanings to the Seraphite enemies. This basically placed an air of authenticity to encounters with the Seraphites, giving the sensation of being hunted by a legitimate structured entity rather than a band of video game NPCs. That unforgettable moment when the eerie whistle cut sharply through the street that was overgrown and bugged-out Seattle remains quite fresh in the player’s mind.

That perfectly encapsulates what @BlindSpideyFan recalled of the invincible feeling: “I’ll never forget the first time I played and they scared the shit out of me because I didn’t know what the hell was going on.” Over time, the fans have plunged deep into their game experience to such a level that some of them can even make out the whistles for themselves, just the way Ellie does in the game. Immersion at its best!

The reveal timing is anyone’s guess—the Last of Us Part II Remastered just dropped for PS5 and PC, reviving the fresh blood’s opportunity to shudder once more at the thought of Seraphites. The graphics have been enhanced further, along with the introduction of more new game modes and content cut from the original, making it the ultimate cut of Naughty Dog’s highly controversial title.

Speaking of which, the difference in viewpoints has always been very much obvious in the replies of the tweet by Naughty Dog—quite a few begging for Part III (@chalenger22: “best game ever made, can’t wait part 3”)—while some being less than enthusiastic (@its_madkatz: “Stop recycling the same boring IP”). There’s even a suggestion for a Fortnite collab (@TLOUxFortnite), because, why not?

The juiciest chat begins as fans discuss what might have been with the canceled Factions multiplayer. @rossb812 came up with a great concept where one side acts as Seraphites and communicate in their whistles against an opposing WLF side that would have no clue what those signals mean. Next level asymmetric multiplayer.

The other side is that PC players are reporting several issues as @EmpireEnemyy discovered game-breaking bugs, unsurprisingly so for a PC port released by Naughty Dog. Let us please have the patch fast so that we can witness those whistles in crisp 4K resolution with surround sound? Terrifying; I mean, in a good way.

Whether for better or worse, The Last of Us Part II continues to be among the most discussed games after its implementation. These little new tidbits about the infamous Seraphite development highlight the insane detail put into every little piece of the game’s world. That being said, if you’ll pardon us, we’re off to replay the hospital segment; our lives could really use a couple of bad decisions.
