Alright, Monster Hunter folks, strap yourselves in: Here comes Lagiacrus, and it spells BAD times for hunters across the lands! The announcement from Capcom today made clear that hunting down this iconic sea serpent will net armor sets for both the hunters and their Palicos. Neat, huh? But Lagiacrus is far from an easy-giving-rare-materials sort of monster. It is a stingy one with its precious loot, and getting in your greedy hands a rare drop will entail much sweat and toil. Tempered versions might slightly raise your odds, but then again, RNGesus may just purposely look away.

The fans responded with some really divided opinions, from excitement to downright horror. While guys like MythicAbyss responded in full caps, “I’M SO READY FOR THIS. LET’S GO!!!” others, like Boneboxy, started preparing for the drops, in sarcasm, of course: “hope it’s 0.01% for normal and 1% for tempered and you get it only from carving the tail.”

Then THE BROD1E pretty much offered to name his firstborn Lagiacrus if Capcom was actually going to release it today: that is some commitment there. Or maybe it is sleep deprivation talking. Whatever it is, mad respect for the grind from these guys.

Now for the tea: people are celebrating that rare drops really ARE rare again. For years, the Monster Hunter community was complaining that materials were too easy to get, thereby almost on all accounts, removing the satisfaction of eventually getting that rare gem, or plate. So with Lagiacrus breaking the ice, Capcom-old boys seem to be truly listening. Good! Looks like they’ve heard the community whine about the game handing out materials way too much per quest,” said Dacen perfectly well.

Others are not so happy. “This doesn’t matter unless they remove the guaranteed drops you can find in an investigation,” was Richietto’s fair counter. If you can still cheese the system, is it really a challenge?

And much like Palicos, the fandom has been mercilessly begging for merch. Kitty-Bit Games asked Capcom flat out if they can start a new figure builder series featuring all the cute Palico gear sets, and honestly, we are siding with them.

If that was not enough to stir up controversy, here comes an even more heated debate on how to pronounce Lagiacrus. The responses were pure chaos: “Luh-guy-uh-kris,” “La gee a crus,” and a legit Japanese “lah-gee-ah-ku-roo-suu” all made appearances. At this point, let’s just call it “that one lightning dragon” and call it a day.

So the verdict is that Lagiacrus is really back for good; the armor sets are definitely drool-worthy, and, oh yes, the grind would be reflected upon. Hype or sulking a little at the thought of it, one thing is for sure: Monster Hunter’s newest update defines the much-needed drought onto the game. Awkward moments or not, that is part of what makes the game fun. Go on and pick up your weapon of choice and get out there and hunt! And please don’t blame us after your 50th run with nothing to show for it.
