Nintendo has teased another of the wild new items coming to Mario Kart World for Nintendo Switch 2, and the fans are losing their minds, but not over the gameplay. The Coin Shell recently revealed has players scrambling for coins as the fiercest debates rage about Kamek’s presence in the game.
So what’s actually going on with the Coin Shell? Put simply, the Coin Shell gets thrown onto the track, and when it explodes, it showers the opponents with coins. Chaotic? Totally. But the drama impenetrable to this item is about what (or who) must have been sacrificed just for it to have come into existence.
Kamek, the famous Magikoopa from the Mario universe, was supposed to be one of the racers way back in Mario Kart 64 but was eventually removed from the roster. Fans have finally been able to race as him through the Booster Course Pass DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe… Now, Kamek is just an item in Mario Kart World- yes, you just read that right- he is not playable at all. Instead, his magic transforms SFX racers into random objects.
Cue rage. Responses to Nintendo’s tweet erupted with anger. One user (@Demonica0) chimed in, “Y’all could’ve just used a Wonder Flower for the same effect instead of scrapping Kamek.” Others, like @LudwigArmadrus, questioned the roster decisions: “Why add Parabiddybud and Conkdor but cut Kamek?” Meanwhile, @SenoniThomaz lamented, “Sad to see Kamek reduced to an item after waiting so long.”
Not everyone is angry. Some are excited for the chaos the Coin Shell will unleash. @MGeek2000 stated: “If you can turn into a Goomba, it’s peak comedy.” And @Beachi1977 shouted at the top of their lungs: “I LOVE THIS 😭😭😭😭.” Classic.
The real kicker is Nintendo is staying mum about it, no explanations, no defenses, just vibes. Players are now left speculating on whether this means Kamek is gone for good or if maybe he is coming back in some kind of DLC release. (Which, knowing Nintendo, it’s probably the latter—gotta sell those passes, right?)
Mario Kart World will roll out on June 5th, and any hopes that the discourse will calm down anytime soon are being mercilessly crushed. Will the Coin Shell be broken? Will Kamek fans revolt? Time will tell. What is for certain is that Nintendo gave birth to a cleanup-worthy moment.
Also, at least we’re not getting Blue Shells again.
