The crossover everybody had no idea they caught in the need made landfall- MTG and Final Fantasy joining forces to dishing out some adjective-horny rare cards featuring the likes of Sephiroth and Cloud with his legendary Buster Sword. The internet has completely melted over the artwork.

Wizards of the Coast released a tweet about these new MTG x Final Fantasy cards which went viral within minutes, showing off amazing art of SOLDIER’s most infamous villain and spike-haired guy’s favorite weapon. The tweet linked to some developer insights, but really? NO ONE listened to the mechanics FOR ONE SECOND AT FIRST GLANCE ONLY BECAUSE THIS ART IS JUST TOO MUCH.

The hype-train has entered the comment section with fan hysteria, mixed confusion, and wallet fears. “This set is going to bankrupt me,” went one comment- very much in mood. Wait! Others joked about how Sephiroth was holding his sword by the blade while others demanded an art book, like, right-now. It’s chaos plus madness, pure excitement.

From the top, it would be the Sephiroth card with his defining silver hair and the very long Masamune blade and the Buster Sword that indeed looks like it could carve through your deck and quite possibly your bank account next. Neither artist was credited, but whoever does, should be given a raise yesterday.

Here are some things we took away from the madness:

– Has to be some people who are getting back into Magic, JUST for these cards. There is a mighty big crossover.

– Wallpapers of those images in high-res would definitely be in demand. Square Enix, you have been warned.

– Several people went rollicking-wild in all caps. That is just fairly understandable.

– That one person said, “FIRE 🔥 (no pun intended)” and they really aren’t wrong.

This is nothing new in MTG with its crazy crossovers, but somehow the Final Fantasy aesthetic, when combined with Magic’s card style, feels like an altogether other elevation. Maybe that is nostalgia talking; maybe it is seeing Sephiroth from a whole other perspective; or maybe it is just that we are suckers for shiny collectibles.

“Coming soon” is all that we have heard in terms of release dates with at least another round of pre-order panic already starting. If you want to giggle your way to the bank, these might be the new crypto- invest early or be regretting forever.

In a way, the replies on the original tweet turned into a shrine to hype, with artists, and fans alike bowing down before the card designs. That’s an acknowledgment from the non-Final Fantasy bunch too-once even the skeptics are on board, you’ve got a partnership.

So, yeah, if you need more encouragement for still more cardboard to rake through your empty bank, congratulations, have it. Don’t ask for sympathy from us when your dining table turns into a battleground for furious deck building. The one question that remains is: Who will they unveil next? Tifa fight spell? Chocobo tribal? Both are equally terrifying and beautiful.

Well, straight misery from this and the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed MTG set will keep company for our wallets. But…stylish, beautifully illustrated misery… worth it.
