Ever wonder about Larson and Pierre, way before they were the furthest thing from Lara Croft’s toughest but also somewhat incompetent foes? Well, some juicy lore bombs were just dropped on these two highly cherished antagonists, courtesy of the official Tomb Raider account, and it turns out their history is far deeper than we could have ever fathomed.
From where did the cowboy hat-wearing merc come in into the life of treasure-hunting? Well, as far as we know, treasure-hunting was not his first priority. Instead of planning to shoot up ancient ruins, he was actually a real military figure before going into the whole treasure-hunting lot. And Pierre? The sneaky Frenchman with the fashion sense that would make your eyes water? Apparently, he had other criminal intentions in artifact acquisition.
The Tomb Raider team tweet conveniently teases a whole prequel chapter for these two, suggesting that there seemed to be some point when the two least worked together. Which, honestly, would make sense; why else would they keep coming together for their own wreckage-sightseeing courtesy of Lara?
The post even packs in some slick artwork of Larson and Pierre looking like it was the time to drop the hottest mixtape of ’96.
That said, this lore drop fits perfectly onto the hype train for the upcoming remake of Tomb Raider, including classic games. And the fans have lapped it all up.
A few missed replies (as yet) on the tweet have done little to stop the Tomb Raider fandom from having a great old gi-gai about it. Because let’s face it: Larson and Pierre were never really generic bad guys. They had personality; they had swagger; now they’ve got history.
But what does this mean for the remaster; new bits to the story? Longer cutscenes? Secret diaries stuffed in levels? That is the million-dollar question. They never really explored character motive in the original, so any added lore in the remaster is like a huge win from any long-standing fan’s perspective.
You better believe fans are gonna pixel-hunt every inch of that art now. What is Larson holding-map? Why does Pierre seem to smirk at what he knows? Questions like these that keep the Tomb Raider community alive.
So should you be asking yourself why Larson ditched the Army, or how did Pierre get into the tomb nuisance business? Just keep your eyes on the prize, for Tomb Raider Remastered might just give you those answers…and perhaps a twinge of feeling bad when Lara inevitably boots them off the cliff.
In the meantime, one more thing to hold fast to is the fact that these two have been twisted partners in their crimes for decades. One can only hope that the remaster will do them some justice.
Until then, stay tuned with the updates about Tomb Raider Remastered from this moment on. Because if this speck of lore dropped is anything to go by, then in preparation, we are really buckling up very tight for a nostalgia trip down a very serious lane.
