Geneshift, which was in development for over a decade, is a GTA2 inspired Battle Royale game now available free-to-keep when you download it on Steam.

Developed by Nik Nak Studios, Geneshift merges the top-down gameplay of the early GTA games with battle-royale and roguelike mechanics. It’s all about shooting, looting and driving through hordes of enemies.

Released back in 2017, Geneshift was a hit on Steam, gaining over 1,000 mostly positive reviews. The game offers up a single-player or multiplayer experience, is pretty addictive, and will run on just about any machine. It’s the perfect recipe for a free-to-keep game.

In terms of singleplayer gameplay, Geneshift is focused on an interesting blend of driving, shooting and battle-royale/roguelike mechanics. Upgrades are important, your skills will keep you alive, and death is permanent. If you get destroyed, you’ll just have to try again.

The multiplayer aspect of the game, Battle Royale Turbo, takes the gameplay online against other players. Each round is only about 3 minutes long so the action is pretty non-stop, with no need to wait in a PUBG lobby for 25 minutes, although PUBG  is also free on Steam occasionally.

During this free-to-keep giveaway, the servers will likely be busier than usual so it’s a great time to jump into the game and play. Tell your friends and set up some battle royale lobbies.

It should be noted that there is also singleplayer bot matches where you can get warmed up before heading online. The AI bots respond and act like real players, so it will give you a good idea of what the game is all about.

Other multiplayer modes include Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Conquest and Checkpoint Racing. The online modes receive tweaks and updates to this day, and more details can found on the game’s Discord server.

The game also has a range of different tactical abilities, such as shooting fireballs or bouncing bullets. As you progress you’ll be able to unlock these as part of a skill-tree or pick them up as power-ups.

Lastly, the game has a singleplayer DLC campaign which is not included in this free-to-keep giveaway. However, once you’ve tried the game for free, you may very well be tempted to support the game by purchasing this additional DLC.
