The Square Enix announcement has outrightly left Final Fantasy fans in a swoon. The recent episode of Square Enix’s #CreatorsVoice glorified a tease regarding another reimagining of one of the truly iconic titles: “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade”; and it was implied that this could very well be headed for the much-rumored Nintendo Switch 2. Yes, I said it.
Yet, for all its meagerness, the statement “Let’s defy destiny together” holds quite a lot of weight. Square Enix has remained hush-hush on any Switch 2 ports, so this may very well be our closest to any confirmation to date. And let’s go ahead and say it: if any soul deserves to be at the center stage of Nintendo’s next-gen, then this is it: FFVII Remake.
For those outsiders who missed the melee: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the all-end-all maximum velocity glowy visuals slick load times-speed version of the 2020 older brother; whereas it adds INTERmission, a DLC of fan-favorite ninja Yuffie Kisaragi to the festivities. It first launched for PS5ese, but ever since, the fans clamored for a Switch port, and with the rumors of Switch 2 just flying in the air, everything just is looking all too perfect.
This is one very big matter. First, and for the best-in-the-world, the original FFVII is one of those games that defined the generation it came into. The dashing of the remake into limelight leveled-up the spotlight so much, combining nostalgia with modern gameplay. Bringing it to Nintendo’s next-gen console would definitely open up yet a whole new hand of audiences who’ve never seen the Cloud chronicles in crisp, possibly portable gloriousness.
However, the thing is, Square Enix never did specifically go out to say, “Now, this is the Switch 2.” Nintendo has just been tight-lipped about their next system, with rumors leaking that it may arrive in 2024, but nothing is set in stone. Well, the tease came at such perfect timing. Maybe Square’s testing the waters before the usual full reveal. Or they’re just messing with us. Classic Square Enix way.
If it does, it will be huge. Switch 2, by specs, is said to be ready for the taxing visuals of the Remake, and let’s face it, managing to take FFVIIR on the go would be a dream come true for many of us. The very thought of grinding through Midgar on the subway really gets me.
Nonetheless, there reaction some questions still floating on the surface. Is this going to be a straight port, or is Square Enix going to pull some Nintendo antics and nerf it even further? Likewise, what about the performance? The PS5 version is a buttery smooth gamer experience; whether the Switch 2 can deliver the same amounts of smoothness would make or break the justice in this game.
In the meantime, all we need is patience. Square has a thing for cryptic teasers, and Nintendo is the only competitor for them for secret-keeping. But maybe judging from #CreatorsVoice, it might not be long before this is over.
So, grab your Buster Swords and pray to the gods of gaming. If this happens to be true, 2025 just got a lot more exciting! Otherwise, we at least have Midgar on PS5.”
Keep watching for those Nintendo Directs, then. I’ve a feeling the next Cloud adventure could be just around the corner.
