Bethesda is asserting the annual Fallout Day live stream event and the public is almost taking it as a given besides being very excited. The very first hint about the event came from the official account of Fallout which tweeted that the event would start at 1pm ET today with a pre-show at 12:40pm ET. The pre-show had Fallout for Hope and ScottyKFitness, but the replies are focusing on dystopian issues like remakes of the original games.
It is unbelievable seeing such a huge number of people asking for the remakes of F3 and NV. Gamers are not only putting forth memes and other funny stuff to show their demand for the remaster but also taking the extreme step of demanding Todd Howard to grant their wishes personally. One user by the name of @Vinnydanger1 posted a picture of a candle-lit area where “Fallout 3 Remaster” was written in the middle, as though it were some witchcraft ritual. That’s loyalty!
Moreover, it is not a few users but it seems like every third comment is a variation of “give us New Vegas remake” or “when will Fallout 3 be remastered?”. @THEOhioTitan actually called them cowards for not announcing it before the start of the new season. The atmosphere is… quite intense, to say the least.
What is even more interesting is that some players are actually the ones who are bringing down the high of expectations. @UnoptimizedFool wrote “A lot of you guys are expecting a little too much from this event” which may be very much so. And @berony27 just simply commented “Don’t expect anything xd” which can be interpreted either as very pessimistic or just realistic judging by past experiences from the Fallout Day events.
To be honest, the replies are a good picture of the community being somewhat divided into different groups. On one side, we have the gamers who still take an interest in Fallout 76, and @Mr_S3rv3r is supporting the game’s upgrade policy and mentioning all the stuff people are usually given to do that are coming this year – raid Gleaming Depths, updates for “Ghoul Within,” fishing, CAMP revamps, new map areas. If you are a regular player of 76, all that is a considerable amount of good stuff to be thankful for.
On the other hand, there are players like @MISTERJADED_ and @S042DouglasRT who seem to be completely fed up with 76, grumbling about the lack of content and labeling the upcoming updates as “mid af.” The replies are characterized by quite a heated debate on whether the Austin studio is not doing its job quickly enough or whether the game is literally maintained on life support.
However, what is most revealing is the fact that so many people are asking for New Vegas in particular rather than anything else. @L_O_S1 exclaimed “Just give us the New Vegas remaster already, you know that’s exactly what the fans want!” and they are right – the demand for a modern version of that game is really very huge. But still, people do not forget about the loading times that were extremely bad especially on the Strip, with @AtomicWeazel saying “Less loading screens on the strip would be GOATED” which indeed that would be very nice.
There are even doubts about who will be making the final decision. @Mr_S3rv3r remarked that if anyone is amusing themselves with the idea of remaking FO3/FO-NV or having a new FO5 game, then they better shift their focus on the Maryland Bethesda studio. The difference between the two studios that most players probably do not realize – each studio is responsible for a different part of the Fallout universe.
The demands have gotten very wild; for example, @MrDirecting outright stated “I need Microsoft to transfer the IP to another studio” which does sound quite dramatic. And @TheRealYimYam requested for a “Tes 6 remake” which have not even been released yet so that is… very optimistic timing.
Nonetheless, it is a very nice thing to see that the love for the older games is still very strong in people. @dinhotheblue said he/she’ll “defend FO76 for as long as I can” but then immediately went on to express concerns about reused atom shop content and having FO1st atoms locked. That is just the very kind of nuanced take that is so rarely seen – someone who is on the side of the current game acknowledging its flaws and still demanding more from the classics.
The live stream seems to be promising an event that is typical of Fallout Day with a community pre-show, the main event, and a fun post-show for charity afterward. But the playerwn response indicates that it is not only 76 updates or new atom shop items that people want – in fact they want to experience once again the single-player thrills that made Fallout so famous in the first place.
It is something that will be revealed later whether or not Bethesda meets those expectations today. The company has practically been busy with 76 and the anticipated Fallout 4 next-gen update, consequently a full remake announcement may be quite a stretch. Nevertheless, the sheer magnitude of the demand in the tweet replies cannot be ignored – the community has made its wish known, and it is basically: to repackage the classic Fallout games and make them shiny new again.
It is very intriguing how a mere announcement of a broadcast can uncover the hidden aspects of what the players really want and what they are actually given. The gap between the developer’s priorities and the community’s wishes has never been so clearly demarcated as in the Fallout Day replies. The clock is ticking and everyone is waiting for it to strike 1 pm ET, but whether they will get what they wish for… that is the real mystery of this Fallout Day.
