And with the delayed arrival of version 2K26, EA Sports has furnished the players with their first official glimpse, along with the hype trailer that has been rattling for eternity. The game will release on the 10th of July, and pre-orders are already available; however, it is the way in which the community has reacted that has really garnered some attention, given the very long wait-wait-wait for a virtual college football. And, indeed… it is chaos-the good kind.

Contrary to selling the hype, the trailer starts with back-and-forth banter between the powerhouse programs, real-world coaches, and those crackling traditions that make college football a league apart from any other in sports. This appears to be EA really pushing the envelope with authenticity, from the local ambient stadium noises to the little things that an alumnus would instantly recognize and feel at home back in college. Of course, that did not stop gamers going frame by frame, scrutinizing it like it was the Zapruder film.

And there it was-the cover dilemma! While some said that it was far better than any of the past Madden covers (ouch), others just went about roasting it. “This is ugly,” one guy tweeted, while another cracked up commenting on the “AI-generated” fans set in the back. Classic gamer mentality-never happy but always obsessed.

Next comes the roster drama. Tebow’s in, but there’s no Manziel in sight? Sanders’ silence sent one player into a capital letter frenzy: “WHERE IS DEION????” Some questioned why some programs received more in-your-face treatment than others, with another salty one chiming in, “No love for my Oklahoma Sooners, a powerhouse program. Bet.” ACC fans are beginning to notice that the conference is being trashed in marketing as well. So, let the tribalism begin… months away from the release, just like a real CFB season.

Another could be the customizations. Players are all over sliders: tweaking gameplay sliders, toggling features off, and, from selling points, bringing back Teambuilder. “Can we make custom Teambuilder rosters?” probed one, while another threw down FCS conferences should be included. The PC crowd was heard shouting:”Bring the game to PC.” Sorry folks, your prayers remain unanswered for now.

Given few more reasons like this, another topic will be Madden. EA is being roasted for trying to package the game together with some editions of Madden 25. “Can I just preorder it by itself? I don’t want Madden. Everyone knows Madden sucks,” one blunt fan wrote. Oof. The pain is real.

Aside from the complaints, you can smell the hype in the air. “We’re so fucking back” pretty much sums up the autonomous feeling. Following 11 years without college football, gamers are now more than ready to go back into dynasties, mascot mashups (confirmed returning!), and online leagues. Now, the only question is whether EA can deliver on such high expectations. July 10 better come quickly for this crowd.

One thing is for sure, though-that discourse will be louder than an SEC stadium, packed full, for days leading to launch. With roster debates, feature demands, and some first-class hatred, College Football 26 ideology may just break the Internet this summer. Get cracking on those custom playbooks.
