DOOM has released an Infernal Chasm heavier music sample, and the crowd… well, it has opinions to share. Originally posted on DOOM’s official Twitter account, the replies almost instantly turned hotter than the Hell levels in Eternal.

First up were the Mick Gordon supporters; one reply after another had ploys for “Pay Mick Gordon,” “Mick was better,” and “fix your relationship with @Mick_Gordon.” For those unaware, Mick Gordon composed that face-melting soundtrack for Doom (2016) and for Doom Eternal, only for what are considered to be awkward relations and split with id Software. With every announcement of new track comes more and more “bring back Mick” comments. “You guys should try to cross the infernal chasm between iD and Mick Gordon by paying him,” said one user. Just ouch.

But some were into it. The track was quite the vibe. Xbox Game Pass UK replied, saying, “head banging so hard it took 5 minutes to type this,” while another called it a “dope soundtrack.” There also existed one party that inquired if it was Doom’s tribute to Children of Bodom– that’s a pretty deep cut, to be honest.

Meanwhile, the Quake fans were being ghosts in the background. “How can I help you realize you need to reboot Quake like you have for #Doom?” one asked. “If want to play Quake means I play Quake not Doom,” another plainly said. Fair it is.

Suddenly, randomly in the midst of the fray, someone downed a Dragon Ball reference. Naturally. “I like Dragon Ball,” he went on unprompted, leading one other to reply: “says the guy with Dragon Ball in his name.” That’s Twitter for you.

The aforementioned were joined by a few other redditors who with relish threw salt on the game itself. “Kinda shitty the game is not on Switch for some reason,” one user said; “please fix the Berserker trophy glitch” were the next words. Another very dissenting voice merely stated, “mid ost, goat game,” which… is an opinion.

Now farthest-from-subtle-and-nuanced-and-most-balanced came the guy admitting the soundtrack grew on him post-track 6: “Give it a chance, it’s still very much Doom.” But can we be honest here? This is the Doom family. Subtlety, and nuance, as rare as an opportunity to peacefully agree on a demon.

So, what’s the verdict? New track out, fans split down the middle, Mick Gordon enormous shadow frightening everyone into silence. Will we ever see id Software repair this rift between themselves and the very man who brought the sound of modern Doom into existence? Not likely. But then again, maybe not; that headbanging is surely ongoing.
