Ever since Bungie has released a big patch for Destiny 2 introducing the Explorer Mode for the Ghosts of the Deep dungeon, quite a lot of conflicting opinions have been aired. Some are very excited; some are disappointed; and then a third group is just in a puzzled stare. Diving into it.

This is the juicy bit: Explorer Mode is now live for Ghosts of the Deep, allowing the dungeon experience for those who might have been scared away by its very punishing difficulty. This mode shuts off these punishing mechanics to ease in the newer players while they go about exploring this dark matter-underwater arcology of Titan. According to Bungie’s tweet, this mode is supposed to “guide your friends through the deep sea,” which, ironically, could not sound cooler—until one opens the replies below.

The change has brought ravenous green-eyed critics to celebrate it. Roger Palmer (@rogpalmeruk) said it was; “A great way of opening this content up for people that have maybe never touched dungeons before.” Another one, Tony (@tonybmp25), is really looking forward to this being his first dungeon, but the cheers are not unanimous.

And the complaints? Oh, those are plenty. @mrmisomanga4124 tried to put death to any hope of mechanics involving water in Destiny, going: “Imagine actually being able to drive across or in water in patrol zones… But no, Bungie came up with this b.s.” While @LHowling1980 said that they’re just tired of grinding: “Can’t be bothered anymore, after getting the same loot over and over.” Then @Logan63215 chimed, “It’s a waste your time dungeon.” Ouch.

Slow pacing might be an even bigger gripe out there. Some have mentioned, citing its slowness and tedium, that @nagee55555 is praying for the introduction of teleport points between sections: “Bungie, have you ever tired of pressing ‘W’?” @ShadowWolfWolf3 gave Bungie a suggestion to go with “drop the armor as well instead of weapons that serve no purpose except for collection.”

Then there is the makings of a general looting debate. Some, like @SuperSizeSenpai, are grinding for god rolls; others seem to think this is too much effort to be worth it. One user even joked about selling their unused Ghosts of the Deep jacket (@massfusion27), which… unusual, but fair.

Even though Bungie might have tried to introduce the Explorer Mode to ease newcomers into the content, the varying reactions in a way mirror the schism of the community on the issue. Some are asking for more hand-holding while others believe the game’s already too easy; one member of the latter camp snapped back at a fellow member asking for more tutorials: “@ProSportsGuru93: Just get better. You don’t need your hand held for fucking everything.”

So, is Explorer Mode a win? Absolutely for a few. For more, another reason to gripe. Free content, either way! Why not just give it a go yourself? Potter your way around George the Thrall, though-he seems to be lurking in the waters somewhere. What a nightmare fuel release that was, @silly_Nmd.
