Destiny 2’s Spire of the Watcher dungeon has continually been an enormous grind for players on the arguably harder level, Ultimatum. Bungie’s official Twitter handle got the community talking about whoever had the good fortune to have climbed the unconscionably cruel path, with the replies offering a mixed bag of acclaim, ire, and plain old exhaustion.
Let’s get back to the dungeon: Spire of the Watcher is one of Destiny 2’s endgame events and is made almost as an ultimate trial for the seasoned Guardians. Ultimatum difficulty is just about everything turned up to eleven—enemies hit harder, mechanics punish more, and the margin for error just disappears. It’s as if this particular kind of content segregates casual players from hardcore players. And judging by the answers, that is about what’s happening.
Jadie Shark and Hawthorne7 are some of the very few who answered the question with legitimate pride, saying that they have done it more than one time. Hawthorne7 even said that before the reset this week, they had done it at least 31 times. That must have either been seasoned commitment… or the onset of madness. Hard to say. On the other hand, there were players such as Deadmanofthe08, who admitted to having trouble with it and said it was “stressful” and “rough” on many occasions,” while Razen stated rather outright from their perspective, “impossible.” Same.
But then there is the casuals view. markymagic546 commented that the loot would be worthless in a couple of weeks anyway. Leonard BongChops, meanwhile, called the difficulty “daft,” which is pretty fair. Ultimatum isn’t for everyone, and that’s completely okay.
Another interesting discussion is formed around finding groups. Some players (Mr_Blinx_ and return_curse) pointed out the problems in finding teams that won’t just bail on you after a wipe, and DarkShad_ indicated the opposite, stating that 90% of their LFG was pretty alright. So I guess it all comes down to your luck in finding the right group.
And then there are the bane. Proclaim gave out a statement that basically said tribute to having been banned for 14 days with a non-reply to their appeal. Oof. Level of a different kind of difficulty spike.
Laughter erupted when Omar suggested turning dungeons into haunted ones for events, either Guardian Games or Solstice. Spooky Duality or Presage would really be terrifying. But, kind of cool, right?
At the end of the day, Spire of the Watcher on Ultimatum is a beast. Some have tamed it, some are still in the process, and some have gone on to declare it not worth their headache. And honestly, all stands are valid. Destiny’s endgame is supposed to be hard, but it is also supposed to be fun for those who don’t enjoy world-building; stepping away should be okay.
All in all-a solid good luck, Guardians-will be needed.
