With Destiny 2 approaching its fourth year, the devs at Bungie are looking to make some changes to how future updates and storage will work for Destiny 2, starting with the Beyond Light expansion coming in November.

Bungie has made some pretty significant changes in order to decrease file size and install times, starting with a revamped content building and patching pipeline. As of now, due to Destiny 2’s current size, it takes more than 24 hours to be able to get new patches ready, but Bungie aims to cut that time to just 12 hours after Beyond Light drops.

Unfortunately, this optimization will come with a painful price; Bungie has stated that players will have to re-download the entire game in order to benefit from the new system. For players with slow or limited internet data, this could be pretty inconvenient to say the least.

However, Bungie does have plans to mitigate the pain somewhat. In order to help with download times, predownloads for Beyond Light will start sometime in the evening of November 9th, at least 10 hours or so before it officially goes live on November 10th.

It should be well worth the wait, though, since the file size will be decreasing by 30-40%. After the devs go through and cut all of the dead content (content that has been replaced or changed) from the game, the new file size should range anywhere from 59-71 GB, depending on your platform.

If you don’t know much about the new expansion, Beyond Light is the next big expansion to come to Destiny 2 after Shadowkeep’s release last October. Beyond Light is set to take place on the ice moon Europa, one of Jupiter’s many moons. Europa, once home to a bustling Golden Age city, now slumbers beneath the snowy terrain.

Eramis, Kell of the House of Darkness, seeks to use the power of Stasis to empower her forces and take revenge on the Traveler for abandoning the Fallen millenia ago. Players will have to join forces with the Exo Stranger and seek these powers for themselves before she can do so.

Stasis is a cold, alluring power that goes beyond the light of the Traveler and into the dark and decay of the Pyramid-led darkness. Each class will get a new Stasis subclass that freezes and shatters their enemies. Warlocks become Shadebinders, Titans become Behemoths, and Hunters become Revenants.
