Steam has compiled a “Best of” list for the 2019 most played games on the platform.
The Best of 2019 Most Played list is broken down into four categories, 100,000 simultaneous players, 50,000 simultaneous players, 25,000 simultaneous players, and 15,000 simultaneous players.
All in all, 12 games successfully had at least 100,000 players logged in at the same time. Steam didn’t count random spikes in players as a metric for this list. Some games may have hit the 100,000 player threshold, but it was unsustainable as players were just logging on for a specific in-game event or reward.
There are games on this list that shouldn’t be a surprise to veteran Steam gamers, and possibly one or two that are. Here are the 12 games that had at least 100,000 active players during the year:
Destiny 2 – Released 2019, Price: Free to Play (not including expansions)
Total War: Three Kingdoms – Released 2019, Price: $47.99
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – Released 2019, Price: $38.99
Grand Theft Auto V – Released 2015, Price: $14.99
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege – Released 2015, Price: $7.99
Path of Exile – Released 2013, Price: Free to Play
Dota Underlords – Early Access, Price: Free to Play
Dota 2 – Released 2013, Price: Free to Play
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Released 2012, Price: Free to Play
Halo: The Master Chief Collection – Released 2019, Price: $39.99
Warframe – Released 2012, Price: Free to Play
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – Released 2017, Price: $14.99
A few of these games are a no-brainer. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is one of the most played battle royale games in the world, drawing thousands of players on multiple platforms.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection contains some of the greatest FPS games of the last few decades, including the coveted Halo 2.
Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive are blockbuster games on Steam, and have been a cash-cow for the platform since the early 2010’s.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege continues to be a success for Ubisoft, which is essential because of their widely-known issues with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
And lastly, Total War: Three Kingdoms and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have been massive games in their own rights, releasing this year.
Steam continues to a fantastic platform for PC gamers, and it will be interesting which of these games will be able to hold player engagement and be part of the Best of 2020 Most Played list.
