The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already an instant classic. It might be harder for some of us “old geezers” to imagine, but this game is basically the Ocarina of Time for the younger generation, and it is really great that these kids are getting a chance to experience their own version of something that inspired so many of us in such a short time. It is truly great.

That is exactly why the hero of this week is none other than Rory Steel who built a special adaptive controller for the Nintendo Switch game so that his daughter could play it despite her difficulties using a normal controller.

For some people with disabilities, using a standard controller can be incredibly difficult. There are all kinds of difficulties, and depending on who wants to play, no one controller can work for everyone. That is why these efforts are truly great.

Rory went out and bought a Microsoft adaptive controller and some eBay parts and got to work making the controller for his daughter. He ended up staying up all night working on it, but it all ended up being worth it when we all got to see that smile while she was finally able to play a game that many of us have been taking for granted for the last few years.

Breath of the Wild is the first real open-world version of The Legend of Zelda series, and players can run around the following Link as he once again attempts to defeat Ganondorf and save the Kingdom of Hyrule from absolute destruction. Of course, Zelda is also in the game. (Duh.) But one of the most interesting aspects of the game is that all of the weapons have durability statuses that run down when being used too much or too often. So there’s quite a bit of strategy involved too.

In one tweet, Rory wrote that his daughter, Ava, “can play Nintendo Breath of the Wild on her Switch like her friends now. All thanks to Microsoft.” He added that she gave the controller a big thumb up. That is truly great and awesome.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been out for a while now on the Nintendo Switch. If you still haven’t managed to play it, I highly recommend you go out and grab yourself a copy as soon as humanly possible. It will be a great time for everyone involved.
