We’re just a couple of months out from the release of Borderlands 3. This installment looks amazing based on the trailer announcement and extended gameplay footage that have been shown.

While you wait, it might be worth going back to where it all started. That game is — of course — Borderlands GOTY Edition. Xbox One and PC users will be happy to know that for just this weekend, this game will be completely free to play. It will then be half off a week later for those that want to continue their looting-shooting journey.

This game has a lot of updates that weren’t included in the original. The graphics are slightly better, but not so much to where you’ll instantly notice. That’s not a bad thing, either. It’s just a testament to the fantastic graphics that the original had, showcasing a cartoonish style of visuals.

You can certainly spot a Borderlands game when you see it. The colors are dialed up in this edition, which is great if you’re set on playing this game on a 4K television. What’s of particular importance in this edition is you get all of the DLC, including the Secret Armory of General Knoxx.

The main campaign is still where you’ll maximize your time. There are so many missions to go on. They have a pretty decent amount of variety, too, so you don’t get bored with the pace. The characters are great to re-visit or be introduced to for the first time. How can you forget the first moment you ran into Claptrap? He’s a staple of the series.

If you’ve played this game before, than this weekend may be the perfect time to explore the story with a new vault hunter. There are plenty to choose from. Using someone you’re not accustomed to could give you a whole new perspective and ways to approach the combat.

Another addition worth mentioning in this GOTY edition is a mini-map. It’s like the one included in Borderlands 2, and certainly comes in handy when you’re navigating around areas you’re not overly familiar with.

If you have some time to spare this weekend and own a PC or Xbox One, there’s no better way to get hyped for the third installment than to re-visit the original. Again, it has a lot of great characters, some memorable baddies, and of course, tons and tons of guns. It will be the perfect way to amp yourself up for what’s to come in the franchise.
