Summer and Fall months are usually when video game companies plan significant events, such as E3. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many events are being canceled. Some are finding alternate ways to bring information to gamers, while others plan to open back up event doors in 2021.
The Tokyo Game Show is the latest event to announce plans to cancel their 2020 event. Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) released a press release in English and Japanese announcing TGS 2020 was canceled. However, this is in regards to the physical event.
Tokyo Game Show 2020 will go on, but only as an online event. This may be an improvement to fans who couldn’t fly out to Japan, find accommodations, and purchase tickets.
The event was initially scheduled for September 24 through 27 at the Makuhari Messe.
Japan, like other countries across the world, has been affected by COVID-19. Many game development companies have been forced to work remotely or have suspended business.
Some game developers like Nintendo have been experiencing shortages with their products. Earlier this year, there were issues keeping the Nintendo Switch in stock across the world because of issues in manufacturing. Some games, like Ring Fit Adventure that required the use of a physical accessory, were also out of stock.
In a press release posted on the official Tokyo Game Show website, there is further information regarding the cancellation:
“Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.”
While the event is moving online, it’s unknown if major companies will take part. Usually, these companies will announce new games, upcoming updates, or let players try out games before anyone else.
The rescheduled date for Tokyo Game Show 2020 has not yet been announced. The staff asked players to stay tuned to their website when more information will be released. A press release regarding the event is expected in late May, but may not be published until next month.
As for now, players will have to wait until more news is released regarding the event, either by the TSG staff or publishers and developers who planned to attend.
