Netflix seems to have a hit on their hands with The Witcher, a series based on The Witcher books and video games.
The adventures of Geralt of Rivia seem to have captured the hearts and minds of the entire world, bringing the Witcher franchise to heights never before seen, even dating back to the release of the first Witcher book in 1993.
How popular is it?
Apparently, Geralt of Rivia has slayed the internet sensation Baby Yoda, unseating Disney+’s The Mandalorian as the top streaming show in the world for the week of December 22 to 28.
This was confirmed via a report from Business Insider, citing data compiled by Parrot Analytics.
“The Witcher was also the top show in the US with nearly 127 million demand expressions compared to The Mandalorian’s 115 million demand expressions in the US that week.”
That puts Netflix back on top of the streaming mountain where its smash hit Stranger Things was recently unseated by The Mandalorian after spending an unrivaled 21 weeks at the top of Parrot Analytics’ streaming chart.
It should be noted that this doesn’t mean The Witcher is a bigger show than The Mandalorian. It just means that it was able to beat it for that one week. That’s saying something though, as The Mandalorian’s epic season finale dropped via Disney+ on December 27.
The show has done more than topple streaming giants. The Witcher has created a buzz around the video game series once more. According to reports, there are more people currently playing The Witcher 3 than were playing it at the time of its launch back in 2015.
Netflix listed The Witcher as its second most popular series release of 2019, trailing behind the third season of Stranger Things. The series was also its sixth most popular release of the year, encompassing all of the service’s series and movies, both in-house and third-party.
The popularity of The Witcher has brought one question to the hearts and minds of gamers all over the world.
Are we going to see more video game adaptations come to streaming services now that Netflix has a bonafide hit on their hands?
Only time will tell, but one thing we are sure of is that we will be seeing more of The Witcher.
Netflix has already announced that it has picked the series up for a second season. It will start production in January of 2020 with a release expected sometime in 2021. While that might not be fast enough for some of the more passionate fans of this series, there is still plenty of Witcher content out there to explore in the form of books and games.
