It was recently revealed that a behind closed doors media event for The Last of Us Part II will take place on September 24 in Los Angeles, California, and it’s been rumored that the event will showcase three new hours of gameplay, presumably from the game’s multiplayer mode.
In addition to doing a private event for the media on September 24, Sony will also do a State of Play live stream, in which The Last of Us Part II will be featured. After making the announcement, the following statement was issued via PlayStation’s official blog.
“We’re preparing a pretty hefty show, weighing in at around 20 minutes and sporting a fresh new look. And we’ll have some great news to share with you, including new game reveals, new content from PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, and a host of other updates. Should be fun!”
Neil Druckmann, who is Naughty Dog’s creative director, shared a teaser for the upcoming event via Twitter.
There hasn’t been any official news regarding The Last of Us Part II in over a year, as the game was last shown publicly during E3 2018. Of course, the game was revealed back in 2016 during Sony’s PlayStation Experience event, and after the reveal, while admitting that he did have a release date in mind, Neil Druckmann said that he wasn’t going to announce it until they were sure that they’d be able to honor it.
The first game’s main protagonist, Joel, hasn’t gotten much screen time in any of the trailers for The Last of Us Part II, so we could learn more about what his role is going to be in the game during Sony’s next State of Play. But, the one thing that fans are demanding is a release date, or, at the very least, a release window.
In recent weeks, there have been a ton of rumors floating around about when The Last of Us Part II will be coming to the PlayStation 4, and, according to the rumor-mill, TLOU 2 will be released in May of next year. So, don’t be surprised if Sony reveals a springtime release date during the September 24 live stream.
Also, as previously mentioned, the rumor is that the media is going to get hands-on experience with the multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II during the aforementioned private conference, which has led to some speculation that Naughty Dog will announce a multiplayer beta for the game, which is something that they did before their last major release back in 2016, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
