After years of being in development hell, Sony has finally announced that production has wrapped for the Uncharted movie, which is tentatively scheduled for theatrical release in July of next year.

On Thursday, the movie’s official Twitter account shared the news.

The Uncharted movie, which is going to be an origin story for Nathan Drake, who will be played by Tom Holland, is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap). The cast also featured Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, as well as Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle in undisclosed roles. Given that the movie will serve as a prequel to the games, Elena Fisher, Nathan’s wife in the games, likely won’t have a role in the first film.

Some fans were a bit disappointed after Sony revealed that Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake, but the biggest criticism regarding the movie’s casting came when it was revealed that Mark Wahlberg will play Sully. Of course, we’ve yet to see how Wahlberg will do in the role, but he’s recently shared a few photos related to Nathan’s mentor over on his Instagram account.

During a recent interview with IGN, Tom Holland explained why fans of the game should watch the movie, and why people who have never played the games can still enjoy Sony’s Uncharted film.

“I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games,” said Holland during his chat with IGN. “So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”

If the movie ends up being a success, Holland reportedly wants Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to play the villain in the sequel. Of course, if the movie is a flop, there won’t be a sequel, but if there is, then adding one of the biggest stars in the world to the cast will take the franchise to a new level.
