Sky: Children of the Light is a new title from developer Thatgamecompany and is now available worldwide for iOS devices. The game was revealed back in 2017 as an Apple TV 4k showcase, but at the moment it will only run on iPhones, iPads, and the iPod touch. The website states that it is coming soon for Android, Mac, Apple TV, PC, and Consoles, but no guaranteed date has been set yet.
The game was supposed to launch on July 11th, but a last-minute delay prevented the planned release. The game is free to download and has a selection of in-app purchases to be made at the user’s discretion. It is currently unknown how important they will be for the game, but they do range in price from $0.99 for bundle 1 to $49.99 for bundle 50.
The game is a beautiful mobile experience meant to explore human nature. It is sort of like a massive social experiment to see how players will act as there is no forced rules to keep the world friendly. That being said, a lot of clever designing went into the game to try and motivate players to keep in generally friendly and happy behavior.
Sky is an evolution of the thoughts and processes that went into the devlopment of Journey. It keeps a gorgeous world and innovative story at the front but does not overpower the mysterious nature of the game and the childlike joy of stumbling across other players.
Rather than a desert, the game is set in the sky. The developer describes it as a digital theme park and says that when people gather into this park, the trouble starts. The game runs on an interesting karma economy that causes love bombing and other weird effects.
The game’s main principle is to build trust between the mobile gamer and the developers. The team that designed this game knows that many gamers that are on their phones have never played on the console, so they have never experienced an in-depth story. Sky hopes to bridge that gap and give mobile gamers an experience they will always remember.
There are many aspects of this game that are still unknown, and due to its recent release, players are both excited and confused. It is unlike many other mobile titles as it tries to be more than a phone game.
If you want to know more, you can check out our other article on Sky: Children of the Light that took an in-depth look into what players might be able to expect from the game. It is currently available on iOS devices for free, so if it interests you, it won’t cost anything to try and experience a different kind of phone game.
