As real sports are out, Nevada is getting anxious to help supplement their income that has all but dried up due to the novel Coronavirus that continues to extract a deadly toll around the world. Every sport has suddenly stopped operating, leaving fans of gambling with little else to turn to. Thankfully, while physical sports have all but ceased around the world, esports are absolutely booming in popularity as fans are eager to get their competitive fix in some way, shape, or form during the crisis.

The Nevada Gaming Commission has just merited Overwatch League as an esport that can be gambled upon, along with League of Legends European Championship and League of Legends North America Championship. This is off the back of their recent decision that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2 can also be bet upon in Nevada.

Yet the fact that the Nevada Gaming Commission has waited until a pandemic stifled their income before tossing their hat into the esport ring on League of Legends and Overwatch is a maneuver that has some fans of esports walking away with a bit of a sour taste in their mouths, as though they are of less import than their physical counterparts.

The age-old debate about whether esports can be labeled as an actual sport is one that typically draws a line in the sand between the old and the new, the modern and the traditional, and it centers around the keywords ‘I believe’ as though that is the basic measure of fact and reason.

Regardless, esports is one of the few events that can continue to operate during the pandemic, and Nevada is struggling right now to offer bets on anything of merit, no matter how small the events may actually be.

Prior to Nevada Gaming Commission’s decision on esports, their standard offerings consisted of mediocre events such as the upcoming NFL Draft and what teams will win the next Super Bowl, whenever and however that event will actually take place.

Still, to have a sudden influx of users willing to bet on esports may be advantageous to those that have been following them since their inception; they are wildly nuanced in terms of competition and depth, and a brief glance at the teams’ positions isn’t likely to inform users of everything that they could possibly need to know to make informed wagers. Simply put, it might be a fantastic opportunity to clean up from less-informed users if you have the knowledge and morals that will allow you to do so.
