Sonic the Hedgehog has gone through several changes since it was first announced. The main character, Sonic, was changed entirely to look more like his video game version.
A new Japanese trailer for the upcoming film shows viewers new footage of what to expect on release day.
From the official trailer: “Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.”
The new trailer begins with a look at one of the levels of Sonic the Hedgehog. Fans may recognize it as Emerald Hill Zone, which is the first level of the sequel.
After seeing a realistic version of the zone in more detail than the games have yet shown, another surprise appears: baby Sonic.
A younger Sonic appears, holding out a sunflower to someone off-screen. Baby Sonic looks exactly like his older version, complete with his white and red sneakers.
Cute characters often grab viewers’ attention, especially with the popularity of Baby Yoda from Disney+’s The Mandalorian. The first merchandise for Baby Yoda has been revealed, but Baby Sonic wasn’t left out.
The newest poster for Baby Sonic was revealed, where the character holds up a sunflower. Sonic also shows off his big green eyes. In Japan, preorder ticket buyers will receive a keychain with Baby Sonic, but he’s not wearing his iconic sneakers. It’s unlikely the keychain bonus will be available worldwide.
Fans can also download a coloring sheet of Baby Sonic standing in a playground by a slide and see-saw. There was no playground featured in the trailer, but it may be introduced later in the film.
The reveal of Baby Sonic comes at the right time to get in on the hype of the younger version of popular characters. According to the Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account, This is the first time Baby Sonic has ever been rendered in the game. Viewers can expect to learn about Sonic origin’s in the film
Sonic the Hedgehog, the movie, will be released in the USA on February 14, 2020.
