Last year news broke that Netflix was developing a series based on the popular long running Capcom zombie game series, Resident Evil.
Now, we’re getting some additional information on the setting and characters that will be featured in the series as we move ever closer to production time.
According to Netflix, the series will focus on Jade and Billie Wesker, who are 14 year old sisters. Of course, the name Wesker should be familiar to longtime fans of Resident Evil, as it relates to antagonist Albert Wesker, the spy scientist known for his smooth-talking and signature sunglasses.
“When the Wesker kids move to New Racoon City, the secrets they uncover might just be the end of everything,” Netflix said in a tweet. “Resident Evil, a new live action series based on Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise is coming to Netflix.”
The streaming giant followed that tweet up with another, saying, “The 8 x 1 hour episode season will be helmed by Andrew Dabb (Supernatural). Bronwen Hughes (The Walking Dead, The Journey Is The Destination) will direct the first two episodes.”
According to a press release, the series will be split into two separate timelines. In the first, we’re following the Wesker sisters while they move into New Raccoon City. They soon discover the city is filled with secrets and monsters.
The second timeline that will be focused on is a post apocalyptic setting, over a decade removed from the Wesker sisters’ adventures.
“There are less than 15 million people left on Earth,” Netflix said in the release, “and more than six billion monsters – people an animals infected with the T-Virus. Jade, now 30, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past – about her sister, her father, and herself – continue to haunt her.”
There is currently no release date for this series and no casting announcements have been made. It is likely that the initial timetable for release was pushed back as the COVID-19 pandemic has placed limitations on filming all over the world.
Of course, this is not the only zombie game adaptation coming to television. HBO is developing its own series based on the highly successful PlayStation exclusive series The Last of Us. That production will feature game director Neil Druckmann as one of the showrunners, along with the game’s original composer returning to add some authentic sounding music to the series.
While we still don’t have a ton of information about this Resident Evil series, we will continue to report on it as more announcements are made.
