Last week Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced at the PS5 event, today Brian Horton, the creative director of Insomniac Games, gave some more details about what to expect from the Spider-Man sequel.

Miles Morales was a character created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. He first made an appearance in Sony’s take on the Marvel universe at the end of the E3 2017 Spider-Man demo.

Miles Morale’s origin story has apparently been something Insomniac Games has wanted to tackle for a long time. The character’s multi-cultural background is more representative of the modern world of Marvel and a great chance to take a new shot at Spider-Man.

Horton goes on to say that the studio wants to present players with a new story, fresh set-pieces, unique villains, and quest-based storytelling across Marvel’s iteration of New York City.

In terms of the game setting, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set about a year after the events of the first game. It’s winter, and just before Christmas, a conflict between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army breaks out. Christmas miracle.

The gameplay will be focused around Miles’s key involvement in the conflict, as his home in Harlem is at the centre of the battle.

Horton also states that the game will be more like Sony’s other ground-breaking titles on the PlayStation, like the Uncharted series. The studio wants to deliver a full story-arc – heartfelt, emotional, and action-packed.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will also make use of the PlayStation 5’s upgrade in capabilities. Near-instant loading, 3D audio, ray-tracing and the brand new DualSense controller will all upgrade the Spider-Man experience.

The characters have been updated with 4D scans and better skin shading – this should bring the graphics to life with more realism and color. The city itself is also going to look fresh, with the snow across New York pushing the PS5 to its limits.

Lastly, yes, Peter Parker is still around. Miles Morales’s story is a standalone edition to the world of Spider-Man, but Horton suggests it isn’t the last time Parker will make an appearance.
