Call of Duty Modern Warfare is a 2019 reboot of the classic CoD IP, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which revolutionized the way people played shooters online. Its class system and gritty combat were ideal for a mix of competitive and casual play, and it looks like the newest Call of Duty title is making a return to its old ways.
First up, one of the most exciting parts of Infinity Ward’s press release: the 100-player Ground War mode. Ground War isn’t a new feature of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 allowed you up to 12 players on each side, which at the time was complete chaos on maps that were only designed for 5v5 teams.
However, in the press release, IW announced that there would be a specifically-designed Ground War map. Something huge in a scale, perhaps like Black Ops 4’s Blackout map. With DICE stuck on Battlefield V right now, and a certain subset of the series’ fans longing for a return to modern combat, it looks like Infinity War is stepping into DICE’s shoes. There’ll even be tanks and quad bikes on the battlefield.
To match the new scope and size of the game, realistic gun mechanics are being added into Call of Duty. That means bullet drop off, recoil patterns to learn, and in-depth gun customization with the new Gunsmith mechanic. Although there was only a brief look at the different attachments, it looks like you’ll be able to fine-tune your weapon further than ever before in a CoD title.
For those who prefer the competitive 6v6 mode, streamers like Shroud got their hands on a test build to give the game a try. The gameplay looks fast-paced, with the ability to super-sprint about as wacky as it gets. There is no mini-map. You can lean around corners. Each map looks dark and gritty, and well-designed with different routes and choke-points.
Overall, there’s a lot to get excited about. It’s a Call of Duty title, so it’s best to approach with caution, but the hype around the game might be justified. Infinity Ward has also mentioned there will be no paid season pass, with the idea being that they want to keep the player base united rather than spread out over different purchasable maps and modes. There will, however, be likely cosmetic transactions.
