CrossFire is one of the next live-action video game adaptations to enter movie theaters in the future. While many gamers are enjoying the recent Sonic the Hedgehog release, other studios are planning to adapt other titles.
Sonic Pictures and Smilegate are teaming up to bring CrossFire onto the big screen. Tencent Pictures is helping finance the film and is also serving as a co-producer.
According to the Smilegate website, CrossFire is one of the most played FPS games in the world. Released in March 2007, the title now has over eight million concurrent players and 650 million registered players. The game is available in 80 countries and is free-to-play.
The game doesn’t just focus on multiplayer. There is a storyline, which may be what the movie will focus on: “CrossFire is an authentic military-themed FPS where two rival factions, Global Risk and Black List, with opposing world view engage in armed conflict around the world. Global Risk is an international private military organization that strives to fight for their own justice by helping the weak and refusing jobs that go against their beliefs. Black List is a terrorist organization that’s willing to terrorize anything in sight. Only thing that matters to them is money. If the money’s right then nothing is impossible for them.”
Smilegate had previously released a short live-action video for the game when it was released, but that was in 2013. The promotional video starred popular South Korean musicians from bands 2 PM and miss A from the music label JYP.
Chuck Hogan, who has previously written films like 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, will write the script. Neal H. Moritz will produce the film through “Original Film.” Moritz has worked on multiple projects for the company, which includes the upcoming Vin Diesel film Bloodshot, which will be a live-action adaptation of a comic book.
Unfortunately, there’s little additional information about the film, such as the location or any potential cast. So far, there has only been the announcement that the game is getting a movie.
CrossFire X was also recently announced for the Xbox One. The title is being developed by Smilegate, with Remedy Entertainment working as one of their development partners. Remedy is specifically working on the single-player campaign. The title is expected to be released in 2020.
