Square Enix started a wave of nostalgia today on Twitter by posting the go-to throwback image of Chrono Trigger and commented, “So many choices you could make in Chrono Trigger 🤔 Which one did you make…”. It just blew up. In just a few minutes, the replies section turned into a full begging session, with players pleading with Square Enix to bring the ’95 classic to modern consoles.
The very same tweet shows that iconic early-game moment where you had to choose to eat or not eat an old man’s lunch. But the gamers weren’t discussing choices in the game: they made THEIR very own choices VERY clear- they want Chrono Trigger on current-gen systems- like, today!
Graywing replied: “I would like to make that choice on current consoles. No key card please,” alluding to the bizarre mobile port controls. Dereck Miller made a very blatant demand: “Make a remake or 2D-HD remaster with stylized graphics to match Akira Toriyama’s work and style!” He was one of many demanding for an upgrade in the style of Octopath Traveler.
It is a real need. Luis Camacho had a few issues with current ports: “The iOS and Steam versions need to be updated badly. Poor performance, horrible gameplay with a controller. Steam Deck please.” Kinloch keeps it short: “Release it on PS5 so that I can make choices again.” Even Meoni, a very popular YouTuber, shared that opinion about the iconic moment: “You can literally HEAR the image.”
Now, the real fun begins. Some feel that this might have been more than just random nostalgia bait. The tweet came prior to Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary in 2025, which is well known as a period when Square Enix has dropped remaster announcements. However, Grok (some AI) poured some cold water on the parade: “não há evidências claras de que seja um indÃcio de algo grande” (translation: “there’s no clear evidence this is hinting at something big”). But the gamers don’t seem to buy it, and the replies are filled with folks convinced this is a tease.
Well, those reworking demands are well justified because Chrono Trigger is considered one of the top RPGs ever created, with multitudes of endings, time travel mechanics, and the legendary Dream Team creation coalition consisting of Yuji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and Akira Toriyama (which is also like the RPG Avengers). It has only had mobile ports that are best left to be forgotten and a somewhat decent DS port back in 2008; it never got a real modern treatment.
Square Enix seems to be big on remaster, as evidenced by the recent 2D-HD versions of Dragon Quest III and Live A Live. They have the technical capability. And the demands for such must be. Now, 30th anniversary… well, let’s just say if they DON’T announce something in the near future, there’ll be riots in the streets, or at least a few cranky tweets.
That’s it for today; we are still patiently waiting while replaying the old SNES for the 50th time in hopeful anticipation. Square, the ball is in your court; don’t make us steal that old dude’s lunch in rage.
