Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red revealed the unfortunate news that their newest IP, Cyberpunk 2077, had been delayed until September, as the game was originally supposed to be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this spring. However, the devs felt like the title wasn’t polished enough, and while it’s playable in its current state, CDPR still needs more time to play-test the game to ensure that their fans are getting the best product possible.
With the game being released just a few months before Sony and Microsoft release their respective next-generation consoles — PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X — people have started to wonder if Cyberpunk 2077 will also be released for the two new platforms. As of right now, the answer, according to CD Projekt Red, is no.
During a recent conference call, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said the following regarding Cyberpunk 2077 potentially being released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: “As of right now, Cyberpunk is heading for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC. Nothing has changed regarding those plans.”
CDPR’s chief financial officer’s statement echoes what was said during another conference call earlier this week, in which the devs said that they’re looking into the next-generation, but they have no current plans to release their next title for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
“Cyberpunk is right now heading for Ps4, Xbox One, and PC. Nothing has changed in regards to the plans. We’re of course looking at the next generation all the time. We’re privy to a lot of information on what’s going on with these platforms, but frankly speaking, we have nothing to share now related to that.”
One thing that will be released for next-gen consoles is Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode, which probably won’t be released until 2022. So, as of right now, the game is only a single-player experience.
“Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and frankly speaking of the series of events we expect to occur after that date, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.”
It’s unclear what Cyberpunk’s multiplayer will be, but considering that it’s still two years away, it probably won’t be your standard, run of the mill online mode. It’s also worth noting that this is CD Projekt Red’s first time making an online-based mode for one of their AAA titles, as The Witcher series was a single-player story-driven experience.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 17.
