On Thursday, developer CD Projekt Red announced that the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has been pushed back until September 17. The game was originally supposed to release in the spring, but according to the devs, they need more time to ensure that their upcoming new IP will be on the same level as their previous release: The Witcher 3.
Following the announcement, the Poland-based video game developer held a conference call with their investors where they discussed why Cyberpunk 2077 is being delayed. They also discussed the possibility of the game coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
While CDPR is looking at doing something on next-gen consoles with their upcoming game, they’re sticking to their current plan which is to release Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
“Cyberpunk is right now heading for Ps4, Xbox One, and PC. Nothing has changed in regards to the plans,” said CD Projekt during the aforementioned conference call. “We’re of course looking at the next generation all the time. We’re privy to a lot of information on what’s going on with these platforms, but frankly speaking, we have nothing to share now related to that.”
Also during the conference call, CDPR’s Michał Nowakowski talked about the multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077, which is currently in development. But, while the single-player version of the game will be released this September, the multiplayer mode might be two years away.
While speaking about Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer, Nowakowski said that a 2021 release date seems unlikely, which suggests that the mode won’t come to the game until 2022. If that’s the case, it’ll be interesting to see how the developers can keep the game alive until they’re ready to release its multiplayer mode.
“Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and frankly speaking of the series of events we expect to occur after that date, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.”
In the fourth quarter of last year, there was some discussion that CD Projekt Red would have to delay their newest IP, so the delay might not be a surprise to those who have been following Cyberpunk 2077’s development. Although it being delayed is disappointing, it’ll end up being a good thing, as the devs are taking an adequate amount of time to ensure that their next project is just as successful as their previous one.
Once again, Cyberpunk 2077’s new release date is September 17, and it’ll be available for all platforms except for the Switch.
