Strap yourselves in, Overwatch fans, for this is going to become downright silly. Blizzard has just proceeded with dropping the idea of the craziest event ever: 1 Winston vs. 100 Soldier: 76s. Yes, I said it: one genetically-enhanced gorilla scientist against an army of grizzled, sprinting, helix-rocket-spamming soldiers. It goes LIVE on May 6 at 12 PM PT.
What’s this madness? Apparently Blizzard have prepared some epic showdown wherein content creators, and maybe a few lucky randoms, battle it out in what sounds like the most unbalanced team fight in Overwatch history. One side has Winston; the other gets a straight horde of Soldiers. Who’s going to win? Honestly, it is impossible to answer that question. Trust me when I say that the internet’s already going loco about it.
Break it down. Winston has his bubble shield, primal rage, and that Tesla cannon zaps everything around him. But 100 Soldiers? 100 biotic fields healing them, 100 sprinting dudes dodging, and—oh my god—100 tactical visors locking onto poor Winston all at the same time. Either this match is going to be the shortest one ever or a glorious display of monkey chaos.
There are also teases of “surprise content creators” being involved; who knows—streamers, pros, even some from the Overwatch League? No names released yet, but you know all the usual suspects (xQc screaming into the void, Seagull trying to strategize, etc.) are almost definitely going to show up. Who, though, will be able to step up to take on Winston? That person is either masochistic or a certified legend.
This isn’t the first time that Overwatch has gone berserk on custom modes, right? After all, there have been all those 500% ult charge and the April fool’s tricks. Remember crazy legendary moments like all-Mercy, no-cooldown Valkyries? This just might be a little next-level-stupidity-in-the-best-way-possible, however. It will either go down in infamy as an eternal meme, or die a cold, hard death. Nothing in between, really.
May we suggest you pencil it in your calendars, hit that alarm-mark it; just don’t miss this one. Even if it turns out to be a total fiasco, it is going to be pretty dang funny. Who knows, Winston could just work his way into an upset on this one and become the new meta. (Spoiler: He won’t.)
As far as the watching goes, Blizzard is linking to their usual places, so keep your eyes peeled on their Twitter or Twitch come the day of. Grab the popcorn. This is either going to be history or a war crime.
