Voltorb is the star of a new Minesweeper game that a Pokémon fan made for the Game Corner. Over the years, creative Pokémon players have made a lot of fan games, from minigames to long journeys through unofficial regions.

Since generation 1, the Game Corner has been a staple of the Pokémon games. The Celadon Game Corner was a front for Team Rocket, built atop a secret base that players needed to enter to proceed in the game. Aside from that, the Game Corner’s slot machines were a lucky player’s ticket to some special prizes, including various TMs and even Pokémon. Most importantly, spending time in the Game Corner was the only way for players to acquire a Porygon other than through trading. The Game Corner was removed from Pokémon BDSP and other newer titles, most likely due to changes in game rating regulations.

This has not prevented people from adoring the Game Corner and its vintage vibe, nor from growing it themselves. MattOnyx, also known as Nol Onyx, a Reddit member, has just developed a brand-new minigame inspired by the Game Corner. Voltorb Sweeper is, as the name implies, a variant of the famous computer game Minesweeper in which Voltorb replaces mines. In a pixelated style inspired by the look of Pokémon Red and Blue, players must read numerical clues to locate and avoid sleeping Voltorb while clearing the field. If they discover and awaken a Voltorb, the Pokémon will immediately explode, as is its custom.

Voltorb Sweeper is a great source of nostalgia and a lot of fun for any old Pokémon lover. It gives both veteran and new fans a quick taste of the Game Corner, and its simple gameplay and short length make it incredibly addictive. Now Onyx’s skill as a game designer is also on display, as they have created a version of Minesweeper that perfectly complements the aesthetic of the Celadon Game Corner.
