The mini-console market has blown up ever since Nintendo had success with their NES and SNES mini systems. They appeal to gamers looking to re-live some of their fondest memories playing video games. Using them is also simple. You just plug them into a modern television using an HDMI connection.
Where Nintendo has had success in this market, other companies have failed. This was the case for Sony’s PlayStation Classic. It was a good-looking console, but its slow operating nature and a lack of good games hindered its ability to sell well.
Sega is hoping to not make the same mistakes. They’re currently working on a Sega Genesis Mini, which is building a lot of excitement amongst hardcore and retro gamers. It looks exactly like the original Genesis, only a fraction of the size. A list of games has already been announced.
Just recently, 10 more games were added to its lineup. These include Streets of Rage 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Contra: Hard Corps, Earthworm Jim, Thunder Force 3, Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Super Fantasy Zone, and Landstalker.
These are some classic titles that had to be on the Sega Genesis Mini. Earthworm Jim has gained a cult-like following over the years. How can you not like an earthworm wearing a robotic suit that battles evil forces? It’s a game that is still fun to play today. You can’t mention Sega without bringing up a Sonic game. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the better games in the series. It features some of the best platforming at the time. Streets of Rage 2 is another must-own Sega title. It’s a fun beat ‘em up that you can revisit time and time again.
It’s great to see these 10 games get added to the mini console. From everything that has been announced, it seems like Sega is genuinely trying to put out the best product with the best games.
Efforts like this will make the Sega Genesis Mini a gem to add to your collection, especially if you’re into retro gaming. It’s only a couple of months before this mini console hits the market. It will have a starting price of $79.99. That’s a lot cheaper than what the SNES Classic Edition went for at launch.
Hopefully, Sega prefects the hardware that these units come with and gives gamers plenty of options to customize. If they can do that and continue to announce great Sega games, this mini console could be one of the better selling systems.
