PlayStation‘s new samurai action adventure game, Ghost of Tsushima, has set a new PlayStation record, selling 1.9 million digital copies in the month of July.

This came following a highly successful launch period in which the game moved 2.4 million copies in a mere three days. If these figures are to be believed, Ghost of Tsushima has surpassed other PlayStation exclusives like Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn to become the fastest-selling digital PlayStation new IP in the company’s history.

The game released mid-way through July, hitting physical stores and the PlayStation Network on July 17. This is the first major release to come out of Sucker Punch Productions in six years, following the release of inFAMOUS: Second Son in 2014.

The feudal Japan adventure focuses on Jin Sakai, a samurai lord on the island of Tsushima. When the Mongol armies invade and capture his uncle, the Jito, Jin must abandon the code of the Samurai and use guerilla tactics to beat back the invaders.

He becomes The Ghost, a nearly mythical figure who deals major blows to the Mongol forces, making him a symbol of hope and of fear. Of course, this does not sit well with the established forces in Japan, who believe in fighting with honor over all else.

This puts Jin in the middle of a two-sided battle, where he must defeat the invaders while also struggling to avoid conflict with his own people.

The game is receiving a free update that will add a multiplayer mode called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Not only is this update 100% free, but Sucker Punch has confirmed that there will be no lootbox system or any microtransactions whatsoever. All character advancements will be unlocked strictly through gameplay.

Ghost of Tsushima is a game that has been long awaited, first debuting at PGW 2017.

“The year is 1274,” PlayStation wrote about the game when it was announced. “Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan, until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back.”

A patch was released for the game last week, increasing stick tolerance in order to account for drift or dead zone issues. The update also addressed several bug fixes. Despite a fan outcry, the game still does not feature a New Game + mode, which would allow you to start a new game after completing the main story with all of your skills and equipment intact.
