Donkey Kong Country was originally released way back in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and will be available to play on the Switch from tomorrow (July 15th) if you have a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.

A true classic in every sense of the word, Donkey Kong Country features Diddy and Kong swinging and side-stepping their way through 39 unique levels. It’s a game full of childhood nostalgia for many, and for the new generation, it still has a lot of playability.

After the game was announced, Nintendo posted the above video to their official YouTube channel. This Donkey Kong Country ‘Classified Information’ video is a throwback to the old Nintendo magazines.

At the back of these magazines were short pieces of tips, hints and secrets under the title Classified Information. This video shows modern gamers how to pull off some of the fun tricks in the game, like getting Diddy his extra lives.

Donkey Kong Country is also full of some memorable characters, such as Enguarde the Swordfish, Rambi the Rhino, Squawks the Parrot and many other animal friends who DK and Diddy are able to call to their aid.

The game is also famous for its golden bananas – collect enough of these and you’ll ace levels, earn extra lives, and eventually spell out the letters K-O-N-G. It was this tradition that later appeared in the game’s sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Alongside Donkey Kong Country, two other retro Nintendo games are making an appearance of Nintendo Switch Online this week.

They are Natsume Championship Wrestling and The Immortal. Natsume is a 1994 wrestling game and a conversion of the Japanese title, Nippon Pro Wrestling Dash: Sekai Saikyo Tag. You can see why they shortened the name.

The Immortal boasts Diablo-style gameplay that was originally designed to play like a fantasy action RPG converted from the older NES platform.

Lastly, when Donkey Kong County was announced as arriving as part of Nintendo Switch Online, fans of the franchise thought it meant a modern remake was on the way. No news on that yet!
